Match Thread – Can Spurs Find Their Mojo Against The Pensioners

|

Few fans would’ve been disappointed with Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, but following defeat to Crystal Palace and that veritable ‘no show’ – it sadly wasn’t a one off looking at the overall performance against Rennes in midweek, albeit we took a point for our efforts.

The more optimistic in the fanbase will take the positives from the performance, particularly with a number of changes made again, but the more pessimistic will continue to have worries given how quickly the wheels have fallen off and we’ve become so open at the back.

This is hardly the perfect time to face high flying Chelsea, even with White Hart Lane advantage, as despite sitting only a point behind them in the early table, a repeat of the last two performances could see a very humbling scoreline on Sunday evening.

It doesn’t get easier when you consider Nuno Espirito Santo is without Japhet Tanganga (suspension), Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez (still quarantine) and there are continuing doubts about Son Heung-Min and Eric Dier. That’s before we factor in the severity of injury suffered by Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn in the last game.

Let’s see what Nuno does…To Dare Is To Do after all.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

    Thanks for the memories, Jimmy!

  • Niall D says:

    Rip Jimmy
Just a bit before my time as a Spurs supporter, but a great player, I loved the Saturday morning stuff with Ian St John.
    HT
Cheers M8 for the comments, re HK I thought I was seeing things differently from everyone else.
I just want us now to kick on, I hope for Harry’s sake as well as ours that he does, find his scoring boots for Spurs, after all August is long over 😉

    The Lilywhites in black n white… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH7Zi3zUEJU

I’m in tears today… But Greaves, over many years, made me smile and laugh a lot…

    Cheers Jimmy!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Greaves scored in his 1st division debut match.

It was for Chelsea, of course. Against (you’ve guessed it) Tottenham! At WHL… 1-1 was the final score.

1-1 will do me for today. But 1-0 will be even better!

    Up the Spurs!

  • Geofspurs says:

I was on the shelf behind the goal when jimmy made his debut and scored a hat-trick against Blackpool. I have so many memories of him. Lots of footballers are called legends, some were, and some were just very good players. Jimmy Greaves was the definition of the word.

  • Danny Winter says:

RIP Greavsie – as HT says, quite the fixture to mark his career.

    • Love totty says:

I was already feeling emotional today as my only grandson turns 4 today/yesterday in Oz and not been able to go for the last two years. And now hearing of Jim’s passing is overwhelming. There are legends and there are collossi who stand alone in there field of excellence. JPG WILL NEVER BE SURPASSED, not by HK or any other pretender. Simply the best.

I fancy us to beat the Chavs today. 00just an irrational feeling.

      • Geofspurs says:

LT …. He is, by far, the greatest goal scorer I’ve ever seen …. and it was all so effortless.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Starting XI: Lloris (c), Royal, Dier, Romero, Reguilon, Hojbjerg, Lo Celso, Ndombele, Dele, Son, Kane.

I have to say it… I do like the look of this line-up.

It’s the look of a winning team to me…
    Come On You Spurs!

  • allan says:

A great player and broadcaster .
I was at Wembly behind the goal when Jimmy scored vs Burnley in 1962 A great moment . One of my most enduring moments of my time as a Spurs fan .
My father was so delighted with the win that he bought us all an ice cream
    How times have changed !!!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    United get lucky again.

  • allan says:

Well a strong looking line up with my thoughts tinged with a degree of optimism

  • Geofspurs says:

We seem to have found a decent looking starting eleven. I see this as the same as the City game …. Chelsea will probably press hard at the start so if we can survive the first twenty minutes we could well get something out of it. It would be even better if we came out running and got an early goal or two.

  • Niall D says:

In the same boat re team selection, feeling positive, the starting 11 look pretty good on paper..
    Here’s hoping. 🤞😄

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Good first half performance, Ndombele seems to have found his mojo at last.

  • Love totty says:

How the greatest striker ever to wear an England and who was able to excel in a career beyond the game, was not knighted is incredible. If Hurst and Charlton deserved a gong, and they did, Jimmy should have been elevated to the Lords.

  • Geofspurs says:

Really good game of football. Spurs started brilliantly (for a change) but it’s a pity we’ve got nothing to show for it yet. If we keep it up in the second half VS might be a happy place for a while!

  • Love totty says:

In the days before wall to wall coverage on the box, I couldn’t wait for the Belfast Telegraph to be delivered on a Saturday night to read the match report and see the black and white action photos of my heros, Jimmy and big Pat. COYS B

  • 123spurs says:

    Same ol spurs I’m afraid

    • Andre says:

Wasn’t expecting anything from this game such a promising first half as well. Nowhere near enough quality at this club. Nothing will change until we find a number 10 that can pick a pass and put us on the front foot. Same problem season in and out. When you’ve got Kane having to try and fulfill that role and score goals every year what are we really expecting to happen.

  • wentworth says:

What a legend. Greatest goalscorer for England and Spurs. Fortunate to have seen him play. RIP Jimmy Greaves.

  • 123spurs says:

    Never look like a scoring.

  • 123spurs says:

Another woeful performance, I dont even fancy beating arsenal now, that’s how we are
