Tottenham Hotspur desperately needed the performance and result we put in on Tuesday evening as we hosted Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League at White Hart Lane.

A brace for Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min, along with a solo effort from Erik Lamela gave us the comfortable victory on the night and it went some way to erasing the memories of recent results against Bayern Munich and Brighton and Hove Albion, but the question on everyone’s lips in the aftermath of the match is simply – was that the start of the corner being turned, or simply an angry (or lucky) aberration?

With plenty of struggles in the year of 2019, despite our journey to the CL final, we needed something to go for us, but we simply have to build on this now as we have again shown what we are capable of and we just haven’t seen it enough.

Liverpool will be tough on Sunday, especially at Anfield and we all know what the game means without taking a trip back to the summer, so the perfect way to build on Tuesday is by taking some revenge and hopefully, doing it in some style when it comes to the performance.

The question is simple – will we?

  • SR – following on from above unfortunately I think Moura will remain a super-sub and depending on Lamela’s continued fitness and form I can see Alli and Lo Celso coming into the team to partner Sonny and HK10 on a regular basis – probably too good to be left on the bench – but it’s nice to have option’s. If we sign Fernandes in January as is possible we’ll have a full compliment of AM’s and that includes accounting for Eriksen’s obvious departure. I would still like Dier and Wanyama to be sold and a quality DCM signed, that and a RB and a LCB to be Vert’s long term replacement – time will tell what we get upto.

  • El Jefe, I still find it incredible that the player who got us to the Champion’s league final almost single handed is now languishing on the bench. I could understand it if Dele was back to his best form but up till now he has been nowhere it

  • Big question. Can we defend? Pool press high so any fannying about will be punished. I think we can score with pacy counters but not confident that we can keep a clean sheet.

  • Good result in midweek more energy about the team but I think it’s fair to say we won’t get the time or space to play at anfield,If poch goes with same lineup and formation I think we could be in real trouble down the sides especially if son does not track back and got caught out on a couple of occasions against red star.we just don’t have the players that are comfortable playing out from the back ,I’m no fan of Eric Dier but I think he needs to be in team tomorrow just to play in front centre backs to close the space where Firminio loves to drop deep and link up allowing salah ,Mane to make those dangerous runs from outside to inside between fullbacks and centre halfs. We can’t afford to give away early goals or it could be a long day at Anfield hopefully we can keep a clean sheet for first 30 mins and settle into the game.

  • One thing for sure before anybody gets completely carried away, Liverpool are a seriously different kettle of fish to a mediocre Red Star Belgrade side. We need at least a 50% improvement on even that CL performance to survive at Anfield. The reality is that a share of the spoils would be a good result for us.

  • On form we’re likely to lose but given that I’d go there with an attacking side (4231) and look to win – fight fire with fire – we’re not very good at defending so it would be pointless going there with a cautious outlook – go there attack and look to win the game – indeed we could do with the 3 points if we have aspiration’s of catching up the top 4. At the start of the season many on here myself included thought top 4 might not be easy but we should be able to do it – now we’re going to have to up our game seriously to achieve this.

  • SR between yourself and Love Totty you have convinced me that Moura should start – pacy counter-attacks are his thing and with him one side and Sonny on the other if things go our way we could come away with the 3 points especially if HK10 can provide the killer assists he’s been firing off lately. Last season in the home game Moura hit the post and in the away game scored and he’s defo proved a plus point in most of the big games since he joined so would be worthy of a start. I also agree with what some have said in that playing a few long balls to Kane and looking for the likes of Sonny and Moura to play off this would be a great tactic – stretch them out. Harsh as it is I would have to leave Lamela on the bench despite him being one of our best players this season and then pick probably Alli for the ACM role with Lo Celso (and maybe Eriksen) on the bench. Would be nice to see Foyth get a start at RB and Sess somehow finally involved if only on the bench – his time will surely come. So I would go with:

Gazza, Foyth, Toby, Verts, Davies, Sissoko, N’Dombele, Dele, Moura, Son, Kane.

If it’s not working and we’ve got the likes of Davy, Winks, Sess, Lamela and Lo Celso on the bench can always make changes. Although it’s not the absolute best side we could put out, barring maybe Sess and Lo Celso I think it’s nearly as strong as we have and pretty tasty – expect them to give Liverpool a real go for their money – if they’re not up for this game then when will they be and it’s time to start putting things right in the league.

  • If any team can be the first to defeat Liverpool in the PL this season, then it has to be Spurs… I can’t see why not…

The win against Red Star counts. Of course it does. Why? Because we played well. The team looked good, confident. It was a good result and performance for us to take us into what could be our toughest PL game so far this season.

I know that Belgrade were poor on the night but that is not why Spurs were not poor. That’s not how football works. Let’s face it, we have seen Spurs play poorly recently vs other not so great teams. Imagine if we had lost to Red Star.

To say stuff such as “If we don’t turn up vs Liverpool they’ll thrash us”; Is an obvious and cliched statement to make. As that could go for most teams right now. I prefer to assume that we will ‘turn up’.

So, here is my alternative and novel message for the day; What if Liverpool don’t ‘turn up’ and Spurs do? Maybe WE will thrash them…

    Up the Spurs!

  • Have not commented since after the Bayern match which confirmed by observations.but was delighted by last Wednesdays result.

However why do we think that we can turn around our abysmal away form against a far superior team ?

I am all for enthusiasm and optimism and will be sitting in front of the screen watching and hoping but unfortunately my head rules that we will be severely beaten unless …….

  • We have seen Leicester beat Southampton 9-0 at st marys. This was very clinical and showed what spurs need to do and finish off teams. Yes I sympthise for the soton. fans as spurs lost 7-2 in CL by players giving up when goals went against them. Looks like Leicester are on the up this season, no european games and a decent manager with some good signings… can they win the PL again?? this makes spurs top 4 very difficult, city pool chaves foxes gooners all serious challengers ahead of spurs…

We indeed need to increase our efforts from tuesday night for the 2 scousers games, starting at Anfield. Spurs are mid table now, and we are where we deserve to be on our league results so far. A loss today will be bottom half of table and a long way to the top 4 places.

So a glass half full optimism is required by all spurs fans and players… believe we can win and we don’t lose will be the start of our upwards momentum in PL & CL again. COYS

  • On Tuesday we destroyed Red Star, out come the – they are/were a poor side, gave the ball away easily, so nothing for Spurs to go on or go by, blah! blah! I have some questions…

“Could Spurs have played so well that they made Red Star look even poorer?”

“Because the way we played we forced them into errors?”

“Why is it every time Spurs do one/play well there still negatives?

“Could we do the same today?” of course we could! Lets just wait and see eh!. COYS

  • Just hope I will have to eat my words in this game regarding Poch’s team selection, subbing and tactical abilities

  • Love your optimism HT but unfortunately Liverpool never fail to turn up and they tend to win even if they have an off day. We have failed to turn up in almost every game this season and most of our premier league games in the second half of last season. I am trying to remain optimistic but our weaknesses (particularly on the flanks, our complete lack of energy and lack of pace at the back) are Liverpool’s strengths. Can’t see anything but a comfortable Liverpool win.

  • Well just after seeing team lineup,Toby,Sanchez have been disastrous this season as partnership Rose and Aurier liability. This team could get ripped apart if Liverpool are in the mood .this could get messy .

  • So it’s same old, same old again . Let’s hope it will not be the same old result. How can Rose, Winks Sanchez and Alli be the preferable options after the Red Star result?

  • Just seen the line up. Oh no, looks like I will be watching behind the couch. Our best player on Tuesday NDombele on the bench, our back 4 worries me, no Foyth even on the bench nor Lamela (injured?). I just hope everyone steps up, if these kind of games don’t get you motivated then you should give up football. If all 11 players play to there best we can win this game. Good Luck lads. COYS

  • Obviously we all don’t know the state of the squad apart from Poch, but if everyone if fit that is not our strongest team. Lamela has been probably our most productive player, so hopefully it is not an injury. Winks in for Ndombele, i can’t see us having any creativity in there now. Plus changes at the back, i was really hoping we could play the same team from Wednesday to carry on the momentum.
