The latest on Tottenham’s pursuit of Paulo Dybala as Spurs are told to pay £90m to complete transfer

|

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are considering selling Paulo Dybala this summer. The 26-year-old is coming off the back of an impressive season in Turin, but the Gazzetta dello Sport say the Old Lady are willing to accept bids if they match his £90m asking price. Tottenham are one of many clubs interested in Dybala, but it remains to be seen if they can stump up enough money to land his signature.

Why would Juve sell Dybala?

Reports from Italy (h/t Daily Mail) suggest Dybala wouldn’t fit in Andrea Pirlo’s system next season so Juventus are considering using him as a makeweight to sign a player they do want – Paul Pogba. The 26-year-old has made 228 appearances in all competitions since joining from US Palermo in 2015, scoring 95 goals and making 38 assists, so he’s been a brilliant servant to Juve.

It would be a gutsy call considering his fine form in 2019/20 – 17 goals/assists in 25 Serie A starts, 69 chances, 65/107 successful dribbles, 36/100 shots on target, 54 free-kicks won, 13 interceptions and 19 tackles.

What are the chances of us signing him?

We came very close to signing Dybala in the past, agreeing a fee with Juventus and agreeing personal terms with the Argentine international, but his image rights held up the deal and eventually saw it falling through. Dybala has since scored 17 goals and made 14 assists in 46 games this season, so our hopes of landing his signature now appear even more slim.

The 26-year-old’s revised asking price is far too steep. We’re having to sell existing players to generate funds for new arrivals, so how could we raise £90m for one player and still make enough to strengthen other key areas? Dybala’s €7.3m-a-year/€140k-per-week (£6.61m-a-year/£127k-per-week) salary would also make him the second summer signing earning over £100k-per-week, meaning he’d be one of the highest earners at Tottenham.

Dwindling revenue has changed our transfer policy this summer, so players like Dybala may no longer be on our radar.

Summary

Dybala would be a brilliant signing. He’d improve our attack and would take the scoring burden off Harry Kane and Heung-min Son next season, but he’s far too expensive and may not want to drop down to a side not in the Champions League.
