Following a report from AS that Real Madrid that referred Spurs to Marco Asensio’s €700 million buyout clause, fans have reacted with bemusement – and rightly so.
There is no doubt that the Spanish midfielder is one of the hottest prospects in European football right now but he, like many in a Real shirt, has suffered from an uninspiring season, scoring just one La Liga goal.
It is a positive sign that Spurs are interested in players of such calibre, and why shouldn’t we register an interest in him when Real Madrid are doing all they can to land Eriksen, according to Spanish outlet Sportslens.
Daniel Levy has made his name as a shrewd negotiator, and this fact is not lost on Spurs fans, with one playfully suggesting he may open up the bidding with an offer of £3m plus Josh Onomah.
Whilst the transfer now looks likely to never happen, fans should take comfort that the board is showing intent. It is the kind of ambition that everyone wants to see, most of all Pochettino.
On the other hand, it could just mean that Eriksen is indeed on his way out. Only by selling him would we be able to raise the funds to make bids for players like Asensio, but after an uncharacteristically mediocre season from Eriksen, maybe freshening up the squad would be of benefit.
