Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle turns 65 today – so we thought it was timely to take a look back at his best moments while playing for the Lilywhites.
Break-out campaignÂ
Despite previously impressing in the second division, Hoddle had not yet really gained the recognition of being a top player. This however changed during 1979-80 campaign as the country finally started to recognise the 22-year-old’s talents.
That season the midfielder would score 19 goals in 41 league appearances and be awarded the PFA Young Player of the Year award at the end of the season.
First taste of success
The following season would see Hoddle bag his first winner’s medal as he featured in a Spurs side that won their sixth FA Cup as they defeated Manchester City 3-2 in the first ever Wembley replay.
The game is most remembered for Ricky Villa’s fantastic solo goal – a goal which was later voted as the greatest goal scored at the old Wembley.
FA Cup success…again
With both Ricky Villa and Osvaldo Ardiles missing due to the ongoing Falklands War – Hoddle stepped up to the plate and helped Spurs retain the FA Cup a year later.
The midfielder was key to the club’s FA Cup success as Hoddle scored in both the final and the final replay as the Lilywhites were victorious against Queens Park Rangers.
That GOAL against Watford
If there was a goal to epitomize Hoddle’s career it would be his wonder goal against Watford back in 1983. The technique and skill involved in the goal is – one in a million. Instead of me describing it, I am just going to give you the joy of watching it…
Gaining respect from the best
In 1983, Hoddle and Spurs would face off against a Feyenoord Rotterdam side that included a little know player – by the name of Johan Cruyff.
Before the game Cruyff was reportedly dismissive of Hoddle’s talents but after Hoddle’s performance Cruyff swapped shirts with Hoddle as a sign of respect.
