Explained: Why Tottenham missed out on signing Dani Olmo over the summer

|

Tottenham were linked with a move for Dani Olmo over the summer when Christian Eriksen’s future was uncertain, but no deal materialised with Dinamo Zagreb and Moises Llorens & Sam Marsden of ESPN have revealed why.

When the player made noises about wanting to join a bigger club, Spurs were willing to battle Atletico Madrid to sign Olmo. They were put off by his asking price, however, with Dinamo requesting £35.6m for the 21-year-old – too much for Tottenham to match.

The Lilywhites may be regretting the decision as Olmo’s form has been nothing short of incredible in 2019/20. As per Transfermarkt, Spain’s u21 international contributed 21 goals in 44 games last season and already has 10 in nine games this campaign.

Since rising through the youth ranks to the Dinamo first-team, Olmo has scored (31) and created (26) 57 goals in 111 games. The attacking-midfielder clearly has a bright future, but Tottenham turned their attentions elsewhere – Giovano Lo Celso was instead brought in from Real Betis.

ESPN believe Barcelona are monitoring Olmo’s progress in Croatia and have beene impressed with his performances on the international stage too. Whether Tottenham would return for him remains to be seen.
