Mauricio Pochettino rested Serge Aurier in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Olympiacos (September 18) and gave the nod to Davinson Sanchez at right-back while Kyle Walker-Peters was on the bench. And ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Leicester City, Pochettino now has three players vying for one starting place, leaving him with a difficult decision to make.
The 23-year-old is primarily cover at centre-back for Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, but Sanchez has featured at right-back on two occasions this season – against Arsenal (September 1) and Olympiacos (September 18). Whether he’s first-choice when Aurier, Walker-Peters and Juan Foyth are available remains to be seen, however.
The 22-year-old was a regular at right-back until he picked up an injury against Newcastle United last month and has only just returned to the matchday squad. Walker-Peters was only deemed fit enough to make the bench in midweek, so it’s hard to see him starting on Saturday.
The 26-year-old is most likely to start against Leicester, having replaced Walker-Peters during his injury. Aurier hasn’t played a lot of football this season, so Pochettino rested him in midweek, but he’s likely to return to the starting XI after having a week to recover and work on his conditioning.
