Explained: What’s the latest on Victor Wanyama?

|

Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports played down the likelihood of Victor Wanyama leaving Tottenham on loan to an English club on deadline day, but the Londoners are still looking to move him on this summer. European sides have until the end of the month to bring in new players, so the door isn’t shut for Wanyama. He’s just not getting much domestic interest.

The 28-year-old was linked with a move to Burnley and West Ham United, but he may be forced to seek a move away from England as Tottenham are struggling to find Wanyama a suitor. Whether his injury woes in recent seasons are the reason some clubs are turning their attentions elsewhere remains to be seen, but it certainly doesn’t help his cause.

Wanyama amassed only 838 minutes of Premier League football in 2017/18 and 509 minutes in 2018/19. He’s spent the majority of the last two years on the treatment table and out of Tottenham’s matchday squad. The stiff competition for places may also be why Spurs are happy to let him go.

Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Eric Dier and possibly Giovani Lo Celso could be ahead of Wanyama in the pecking order this season, so he’s left with no choice but to seek first-team opportunities elsewhere.
