Explained: Tottenham may have to pay £60m and £0.9m wages to sign wide-man

According to Goal Brasil, Ajax are requesting in excess of £60m for David Neres and are awaiting offers for the 22-year-old this summer. Sport Witness say Tottenham, Arsenal, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and AS Roma have all been credited with an interest, but Spurs appear to be leading the race for his signature. Whether that will result in a bid remains to be seen, however.

FIFA say Neres earns around £873k-a-year/£16.8k-per-week which won’t cause an issue, but his asking price is steep. Tottenham’s record-signing was Davinson Sanchez (£42m) from Ajax in 2017, so Neres would smash that figure. That’s not to say he isn’t talented, however. The Brazilian international has contributed 25 goals in 42 games in all competitions this season.

He’d certainly improve the Tottenham squad and would arguably be an upgrade on Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela. Despite being scouted over the course of the season, it’s hard to see Spurs spending so much on one player given how many positions they need to fill this summer – goalkeeper, centre-back, central midfielder, centre-forward.

Mauricio Pochettino isn’t likely to strengthen an area that Spurs already have numbers in, so Neres might not be on his way to London unless an existing player makes way.
