Explained: Tottenham may have to pay £35m and £5m wages to sign winger

|

According to Tuttosport (h/t Daily Mail), Tottenham are interested in Douglas Costa and could make a move for the Juventus winger in the coming months. Costa turned his loan deal permanent from Bayern Munich last summer but has struggled for form, fitness and playing time this season and has been out of action for the last two months with a hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old has scored only one goal in 24 appearances in all competitions, racking up a paltry 618 minutes of Serie A football for his troubles. Costa is reportedly keen for a new challenge as a result and won’t be short of offers when he’s recovered from injury. Tottenham have Costa on his wishlist but he may not come cheap.

Juventus paid £35m for the Brazilian international last year and agreed a four-year deal worth £5m-a-year/£96k-per-week. Tottenham would have to pay close to £35m and agree a salary of £5m to bring Costa to London, but they reportedly have competition from Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Inter Milan to procure his signature.

Spurs might have to sell an existing player before they make a move for a new recruit, however.
