Explained: Tottenham may have to pay £25m and a £3.1m salary to sign striker

|

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in Aleksandar Mitrovic as backup to Harry Kane. The Fulham striker has impressed in the Premier League this season and would be a good secondary option in attack for Mauricio Pochettino.

Mitrovic is an upgrade on Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen, but the Daily Mail believe he might not want to join a side that can’t promise him first-team football. He isn’t likely to come cheap either. Fulham paid £22m to procure his signature last summer and the 24-year-old has risen in value in eight months.

After scoring 12 goals in 17 Championship games on loan with the Cottagers last season, Mitrovic turned the move permanent after helping them get promoted to the Premier League. Fulham look destined for relegation, but the Serbian international has still scored and created 12 goals in 30 games.

He’ll cost considerably more than what Fulham paid in 2018 as he’s proven himself in the Premier League and has been prolific at former clubs – 23 goals and assists in 42 games for Partizan Belgrade, 55 goals and assists for RSC Anderlecht.

Mitrovic earns £3.1m-per-year/£59k-per-week at Fulham and has four years remaining on his current deal. If Tottenham matched his existing contract at Craven Cottage, they could end up paying close to £40m. Newcastle initially signed him for £13m in 2015 and nearly doubled their money three years later. Fulham should make a tidy profit too.

The Londoners’ record departure was Mousa Dembele to Tottenham for £15m in 2012 but Mitrovic would greatly surpass that. He’s young, in fine form and has a fantastic track record for goals. Fulham won’t let him go for cheap, nor do they need to as a result of his lengthy contract.

Relegation could see the striker request a move elsewhere, but Fulham still hold the cards.
