Explained: Tottenham have a big problem strengthening key area, here’s why

Tottenham were linked with a move for Shon Weissman before the 23-year-old’s agent called the rumoured interest “not serious and is fictitious” in an interview with Kleine Zeitung (h/t Spox).

Weismann has been outstanding for Wolfsberger AC, scoring and creating 19 goals in 13 appearances, but Spurs will have a big problem convincing a centre-forward to North London due to Harry Kane’s existence.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Kane has been first-choice in attack and will occasionally be partnered with Heung-min Son or Lucas Moura – an inside-forward with the freedom to find space in the final third. Pochettino would never start two conventional strikers in attack.

So if Weismann was ever lured to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, he’d lose his starting place and would have to be content with cameo appearances.

Vincent Janssen failed to provide adequate backup to Kane (42 appearances, six goals, four assists) while Fernando Llorente only racked up 683 minutes of Premier League football in his final season.

Tottenham have tried and failed to strengthen in attack, but they need a player willing to sit on the bench who can take the scoring burden off Kane with only  limited minutes.
