Explained: Embarrassing statistic highlights Tottenham’s obvious problem in September

|

Tottenham lost 2-1 away to Leicester City on Saturday after relinquishing a 1-0 lead. It’s not the first time the Lilywhites have thrown away an advantage this season, but Mauricio Pochettino may be worried that Spurs keep losing their lead in games this month.

Against Arsenal (Premier League) on September 1, Tottenham had nearly raced to a 2-0 lead at half-time, courtesy of goals from Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane, before Alexandre Lacazette halved the deficit before the break and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalised midway through the second-half.

Against Olympiacos (Champions League) on September 18, Tottenham were 2-0 up after 30 minutes from goals by Harry Kane and Lucas Moura. They couln’t hold out to half-time, however, as Daniel Podence scored before the break. Mathieu Valbuena made it 2-2 less than 10 minutes after the restart.

And against Leicester (Premier League) on September 21, Spurs had taken the lead through Harry Kane in the 29th minute before Leicester turned the game on its head in the second half. Ricardo Pereira equalised in the 69th minute and James Maddison won the game for Leicester with five minutes of normal time remaining.

Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace (September 14) was the only time this month that they’ve held onto a lead and picked up all three points. Pochettino has to make his side more resilient when going ahead, as sides are finding it all too easy to peg them back.
