Explained: Clubs may have to pay £40m and £3.4m wages to sign Tottenham defender

|

According to reports in Italy (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham have slapped a £40m asking price on Kieran Trippier’s head amid interest from Napoli. The 28-year-old has an uncertain future after struggled for consistency this season, but whether a suitor is willing to pay so much for the defender remains to be seen.

Trippier currently earns £3.4m-a-year/£65k-per-week at Tottenham and remains first-choice at right-back over Serge Aurier, but he’s made a number of mistakes that reports in Italy believe could lead to an exit. Napoli are keen on his signature but aren’t willing to pay so much money to bring him to the Stadio San Paolo.

It’s unknown whether Mauricio Pochettino is really willing to sell the defender too. Trippier admitted earlier this season that he hasn’t been at his best, but selling him would force Tottenham to shop for a replacement this summer. Aurier isn’t good enough to be first-choice at right-back either, so Trippier’s replacement would have to be stellar.

It arguably makes more sense to sell Aurier than Trippier, so Napoli might be left disappointed this summer. That being said, a £40m bid may not be turned down if a club stumps up the money. That’s yet to happen, however.
