England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has admitted Jermain Defoe`s spell as a Tottenham Hotspur substitute is hampering the striker`s World Cup hopes.

The Swede said:’I am concerned about Defoe because he is spending a long time on the bench, if someone isn`t playing many games,it doesn`t give me a chance to see whether they are in good shape or not’

Meanwhile Spurs chief Martin Jol has joined the debate by stating his desire to pick his strongest side.’The World Cup is a unbelievable tournament but it`s not my problem’ said the Dutchman.

Jol, however did praise Defoe`s attitude,’ He has never complained as he knows that would be disrespectful to the other players’

However Defoe has left his two previous clubs, Charlton and West Ham, on not the best of terms.

Will history repeat itself?
