Conte reacts as his side fall to another disappointing defeat

|

Antonio Conte has spoken to the media after his side fell to their second successive defeat as they were deservedly beaten 2-1 by Newcastle.

The Lilywhites started the game brightly with chances falling to both Kane and Son, however Nick Pope in the Newcastle goal could not be beaten.

However, individual errors from Hugo Lloris and Clement Lenglet cost Spurs dearly as they went into the break 2-0 down with Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron.

Harry Kane pulled one back in the second half however Spurs remained toothless and lack-lustre for the remainder of the game, falling to their first home defeat since April.

Conte on his side’s performance:

“I think that instead in the first half we started really well and we played really well. Before they scored I think I have seen only team. It was Tottenham and Pope made two, three amazing saves, if we go to watch the game again.

Then we conceded this goal which for sure we can do much better. I don’t want to comment on the referee’s decision because you know I don’t like to do it, but for sure we can do much better in this situation.

Then just a couple of minutes later we concede a second goal and this second goal could kill everybody. Instead if there is one side I am happy it’s seeing a good reaction from my players.”

Injuries to key players such as Christian Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg meant Oliver Skipp and Davinson Sanchez got their chance in the side.

Skipp impressed in what was his first start for Spurs since January however the same could not be said for Sanchez – whose performance showed that he is simply not good enough for Spurs anymore.

Conte spoke on the side’s injury woes:

“I think my only worries in this moment is we have to try to keep the fingers crossed and don’t have injuries because we are not a team with such a depth of squad to face competitions like the Premier League and Champions League, but this is not something against the club.

Absolutely we knew this situation. I spoke with the club and if you remember very well at the start of this season I said to you that we need to go step by step and have time and patience and have two or three transfer markets to bring this squad to be competitive to play in two competitions like Premier League and Champions League.”

my expectation is that no one will come on this thread to comment. I’ll comment anyway.

the truly disappointing thing about our club today is that it is getting worse each week instead of better. regressing instead of progressing.

the world seems to have caught on to what Conte is doing and he ain’t responding. same old backward passing bs. wake up, Mr. Conte, or face the fact that although you may deny it, you are in fact stupid. Stupid is a failure to notice when the world is passing you by. it’s also being stupid enough to deny in public that you are being stupid before anyone else has gotten around to pointing it out to you.

Never say in public that you are not stupid. It only plants the seed for thw world to notice that what you are doing is stupid.

how likely is it that conte will be around after 2 or 3 more transfer windows?

I’d trade him for Poch in a NY minute,as the saying has it. That’s aboout 7 seconds. I’d exchange him for Ted Lasso.

I hear they are going to re-name it Vital Knobhead. lol

  • TK says:

lol TQ. I’m more stubborn than most, that’s all. I don’t quit easily. But isn’t that knobheaded?

one last comment (at least for now).

how can Lloris continue, either as captain or as GK? it was his atrocious misplay that switched today’s match from a solid Spurs start to an utter disaster, and such things have happened far too often. I made a similar mess of it as a goalkeeper when I was 14 years old, but I never considered myself as a particularly decent footballer. Making a hash of it was my specialty on the pitch. I knew it. Lloris and Conte seem not to. Stupidity is persistence in the face of persistent evidence. Only a man who claims not to be stupid would continue being stupid in this way.

For Conte to regain anyone’s respect he needs to sit Lloris down. We looked pretty decent in the opening minutes of the match until Lloris made a complete hash of it. After that… the deluge.

Enough. Lloris cannot continue as captain, and ought not to continue as GK either.

Stop the stupidity, Mr. Conte. Stop it.

Conte’s system is based on solid attacking play from the two wingback spots. Yet they both can’t properly cross the ball. Sess was just especially horrid today and incredibly frustrating when he gets space on the wing and then never puts the pass or cross in a good place. He then got completely burned on their second goal. Emerson just sucks as well and how Conte continues to favor him I’ll never know. Perisic came to Spurs on a free transfer but it looks like the speed of the Premiership is completely beyond his capacity as his older legs can’t keep pace with the English game.
We will definitely need more transfers come January because looking at who we brought in over the summer, none of them are beneficial to the team. Including Richy who unfortunately doesn’t seem to fit this system much.
A terrible home lose today that props up Newcastle and shows our weaknesses moving forward.

Richarlison hasn’t been playing in is natural position, as Kane plays there. I’ve watched Richarlison play for the Seleção and it’s not mystery to me why he has taken the No. 9 jersey over so many other Brazilians. I hope he’s sufficiently healthy to play at that position in the WC. He’s being played out of position at Spurs.

Why does Conte persist in his favored formation if he hasn’t the right players for that formation? Shouldn’t a gaffer who isn’t stupid, to use the word introduced by Conte himself, adjust his tactics and formations to the players he has rather than to the players he dreams about having? This is why I keep pricking the fellow with his own words, “I am not stupid.” He’s acting a bit foolish, should I say?

You got it right when you called this a terrible home loss and it surely revealed our weaknesses. Conte set the team up so that its weaknesses were revealed so starkly.

I saw the signs when just recently we somehow decided to give Ben Davies another 4 year contract. What other club would keep the likes of Ben Davies and Eric Dier for this long? Last year they performed way above their level in the latter half of the season, but poor players can only hold that level for so long. We are also clearly in need of a new GK who can actually distribute a ball. Hugo was brought in when a goal keeper wasn’t expected to play out from the back as much as they do these days, his distribution was awful and his composure under pressure is a major issue.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Some very valid comments here regarding Lloris and some of the old guard. Don’t agree regarding Perisic, he maybe old in some peoples thinking but he has experience at the highest level and has a winning mentality, the reason we don’t win anything is because most of our squad don’t have this.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

The goalkeeper is a great shot stopper but too rash when coming out of his goal and he is hopeless with his feet.
Wing backs are so important in the modern game but Royal, Docherty, Peresic and Sessegnon are no where near good enough. Royal is one of the worst I have ever seen.
Romero is our only top class defender. The rest are average and in Sanchez’s case a liability.
The midfield players are all excellent – I particuarly love Bentancour but they are all too similar.
The first choice front three are fantastic (Kane, Son & Kulu) but there is no depth. I don’t see it with Richy yet.
Several people were lauding our transfer window. I thought it started well but failed to address so many issues – the poor wing backs, the lack of quality in defence, the lack of numbers and variety in midfield and the lack of depth up front. In this world cup year of all years it should have been obvious to the powers that be that the squad was no where near good enough. A lot of this is a result of our inability to get unwanted players off the books – N’dombele, Le Celso, Reguilon and Winks are still costing us a fortune in terms of salaries and amortisation (no amortistaion for Winks) offset only by minimal loan fees/contribution to salary. From an FFP point of view we are therefore limited in bringing new players in.
Add into the mix a coach who is frightened to bring the young players through, is unbearably negative and inflexible in his tactics and who will no doubt be looking for a way out as soon as the going gets tough. I wouldn’t give him a new contract, it will only increase the inevitable pay off.
In short, it is another false dawn for Spurs – we don’t change leaders as often as the Conservative party but we are not far behind them.
    What a waste.

For all the time and effort that went into this past summer’s acquisition of Djed Spence, it’s just incredible that he doesn’t even get a look from Conte. So much seemed to be put into his transfer that it appeared at the time that he was the missing wingback piece Spurs needed. Give him an opportunity to show what he can do in a game situation which is different than practice. If he’s not the answer there then it was another big transfer blunder and new wingbacks need to be brought in along with a creative setup midfielder.
