The 29-year-old had only returned from a groin injury on Monday and was passed fit to make the matchday squad against Ajax a day later. After Jan Vertonghen went off with an injury before half-time, Sissoko was introduced from the bench and made a big impact.

He racked up more than 50 minutes on the pitch, made 47 touches, 32 passes with 81% accuracy, made three tackles, made one successful dribble, whipped in one cross and drew two fouls. Sissoko’s introduction saw Tottenham get more of a foothold in the game, but he was let down by underwhelming performances from Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

Tuesday’s defeat to Ajax is Tottenham’s 18th of the season and their 11th in 22 games. Spurs have a mountain to climb in the second leg as they’ll have to beat Ajax in their own backyard, but Heung-min Son and Sissoko should be in contention to start the match which gives Tottenham a chance of winning.
