Vital Spurs asked in a poll last week ‘who will go to the World Cup’?

3% said just England’s number one, Paul Robinson. 2% opted for Robinson and Spurs skipper Ledley King. 1% Robinson, King and striker Jermain Defoe. 17% tipped Michael Carrick to join the list and the majority – with 74% – went with five Spurs players including midfielder Jermaine Jenas in the list. Only 3% said more than 5 players!

Sven Goran Eriksson has hinted that Carrick will be in his squad saying: ‘Maybe in some games I would pick Carrick ahead of Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard in order to have a real sitting midfielder. In some games we will meet a team with two strikers and a player like Zinedine Zidane behind them and you have to think about what to do.’ So, looks like the 24-year-old can dust off his passport in readiness for the World Cup.’

Paul Robinson and Ledley King are shoe-ins for the squad, Carrick did himself a power of good against Uruguay and Defoe does give Erickson back up, especially if Michael Owen is unfit, however his lack of games for Spurs could count against him. In his favour is the fact Sven looks likley to take five strikers this time.

Whatever is decided, the future is very bright for Spurs with five possible candidates for the England team and plenty of other internationals also thrown into the mix.
