Defender could leave Tottenham after 11 years

|

According to Football Insider, Cameron Carter-Vickers could be set for a permanent transfer to Luton Town after the Hatters showed interest in the Tottenham outcast. His asking price was £4m in January but has since dropped.

Is there any way back for him?

It doesn’t look like it. Football Insider say Carter-Vickers won’t figure in Jose Mourinho’s plans next season and that Daniel Levy has granted the 22-year-old a move away from Spurs, 11 years after he joined the club’s academy.

Considering Carter-Vickers has made only four appearances for us, the last of which came in 2017, it’s clear that an exit has been on the cards for some time. The centre-back’s contract is up next year too, so this summer is the last chance to get maximum value from his sale.

What went wrong at Tottenham?

Carter-Vickers was the victim of too much competition for a starting place. He had Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen, Tody Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez standing in his way, so first-team opportunities were sporadic.

The 22-year-old opted for loan moves away to get regular football – Sheffield United (August 25, 2017 – January 15, 2018), Ipswich Town (January 19, 2018 – May 31, 2018), Swansea City (August 25, 2018 – May 31, 2019), Stoke City (August 8, 2019 – January 2, 2020), Luton Town (January 30, 2020 – July 31, 2020) – but only turned out for Championship clubs, so Carter-Vickers failed to prove he’s at the level required to play for Tottenham.

Why the move to Luton?

Carter-Vickers impressed during last season’s stint at Kenilworth Road, making 16 appearances for the Hatters and keeping them in the Championship, so it makes sense that Luton are keen to procure his signature. The 22-year-old has vast experience of the second tier due to his five loan moves in three years too, so Luton will be confident of him being successful.

Summary

This is a good deal for all parties. Carter-Vickers is out of favour at Tottenham and needs regular football to continue his development. Luton were impressed with the centre-back’s performances on loan and have the opportunity to sign him again. Football Insider say it could still be another loan move rather than a permanent deal, so the finer details are yet to be confirmed.
