Burnley started this season with an impressive 3-2 away win at the chavs. We really should have taken note, Sean Dyche had almost perfected his rope-a-dope tactics.

Surprisingly in their next game they dominated, tried to play football rather than peek-a-boo and got out doped themselves by West Brom. They have not tried to play anything remotely looking like attractive football ever since. My heart and admiration goes out to their supporters who actually pay to watch them week in week out; no wonder the North of England has a reputation as a cultural wasteland, perhaps they should instead spend their hard-earned on a trip to the ballet? Less dives, more emotional intensity and skills that make your legs quiver. If I had a cloth cap, I’d throw it in the air.

Then they played us at Wembley, a few siren voices were raised and warned that they wouldn’t be push-overs and most expected that they’d use a combination of the Alamo defence plan and a tactical rope-a-dope part II.

We battered them, took a skinny 1-0 lead and they then did what we had all feared in the 93rd minute – pinched an equalising goal. We’d been well and truly had. It was a portent of things to come when Wembley is on the cards. Teams we should beat find a new level of performance and managers have worked out that for all our sideways, backwards passing and retention it can be nullified if they pile up the bodies and are prepared to do a Kamikazee impression when we shoot, of course they also know that only around 20% of our shots these days are on target, so the outcome for them really isn’t that bad. They also know that this season in front of goal if Harry isn’t 100% we have the lethal bite of my Kissing gourami’s and the sting of a sea sponge; Irritating, itchy but really nothing worth getting worked up over.

The bad news for Burnley is that they will have to cope with our Kissing gourami attacks without their impressive Centre back James Tarkowski who has just been hauled up before the beak for violent conduct – and rightly so, he has more sharp elbows than a spider, but at least he held up his eight arms when put on the spot and did not (could not) attempt to challenge the FA’s totally warranted charge.
Sean Dyche has built another impressive defensive unit around Tarkowski and it has been noticed; the 25 year is now on the radar on a small list of top clubs as a possible summer target, including ours (yes we are stepping up our search for defensive alternatives to both Vert and Toby).

His absence will be felt and I fully expect us to profit from it. Burnley will set out to frustrate. They will be exceptionally well drilled and disciplined in their defensive shape, but they will make more foray’s across the half-way line this time as the pressure of trying to show their home fans that they can play a passing game which remotely resembles football worth paying to watch is heaped upon them.
So I do expect we will have a bit more space between the lines and with Sanchez back I think recent defensive frailties will almost disappear, I say almost because if Trippier plays, they will look once again to exploit his weakness in recovery and poor ball control.

Although I am now convinced that we will not see the best of Aurier until next season, I am hoping that he will get the nod and continue to show the small incremental improvement in him that is beginning to get noticed.

Chris Woods is the man that stole 2pts off of us at Wembley and I do expect him to be a handful at set-pieces again, he is a kiwi but is almost a throw-back to the old-fashioned static English target man of yesteryear, who on occasion can even run a bit with the ball at his feet, although from what I have seen, Dyche does not encourage it in case they start realising that they can play football that southerners might recognise.

I don’t expect a formation change for this one, and think we will set up again in our favoured 3-4-3 with Lloris in goal, Disappointing Dier, Super Sanchez, Victorious Vert, then I hope Ambling Aurier, Rambling Rose, So-so Sissoko, Wonderful Winks, Stupendous Son, Excellent Eriksen and one of our own, Harry. There might be a slim chance of Eriksen being rested and starting with Lamela, but I am told that this all depends on how he does into today’s pre-match session.

As to the outcome, I do expect a win, it will not be a walk in the park, they are too well organised for that but I will leave my exact prediction to the Xmas Prediction Competition – as I want to win it.

Hopefully, Poch will not be tempted to play Alli and will put the proverbial arm around his shoulder and make him wear a blanket for the day, the lad could do with a couple of games under the blanket, but preferably on his own and not with his gorgeous girlfriend, whose fame is rapidly becoming greater than Alli’s.

I cannot for the life of me imagine why, unless it is because her daily dose of selfies on instagram have left less and less to the imagination – as her followers have soared, can Alli’s loose of form be blamed on this distraction?

We need to win this, they are above us and we need to back in the scrap for 4th, anything other than a win and I will be forced to drown my sorrows in a bottle of top class Armagnac, mind you, I will probably do the same if we win?

A Vital Merry Xmas to all, may all your dreams and wishes come true. If you get the chance do something exceptional for someone who didn’t expect it and who you don’t know from Adam, and may even deserve it – I promise you it will make xmas just that little bit more special

  • I?d take Northerner?s flat caps over the bunch of Southern Softies masquerading as THFC. Whatever brand of football they play play Burnley are above us in the table. Could it be that their manager knows how to optimise his resources while ours just sails along with square pegs in round holes in terms of having the resources to play the way he wants to play if he even knows himself. Rumours of strong words in the dressing room after the City game and at Monday training. Who knows but there better be a more dynamic, integrated performance tomorrow. Maybe they should all wear gloves and flat caps.

  • Spursex… the article is better than the jokes.. HoHoHo. Tomorrow, Aurier must start, my team with DIer Sanchez Jan. Davies / Rose on left. I would not be surprised if Poch played Foyth and Dier into RDMF. Which will give Dembele a rest (on bench) and support to Winks, and cover to Aurier when forward, as we must cover the right side as city took full advantage. Agree Dele needs to be rested to the bench, Lamela to start. Forward 3 Harry Ericsen Sonny. COYS

  • Those jokes were awful. Lol. I hate when Dier plays in midfield he is so boring and just passes the ball back 85% of the time. I’d go with a back four, that means dier will play mid (unfortunately) with Dem which isn’t to bad and still good enough to win what will be a tough game. Coys

  • They are awful, and they make for cringe-worthy reading, but I wonder how many will own up to using them between now and boxing day….?!

  • Let’s hope the joke willl not be on us Spursex. Could be if Poch hasn’t learned the lessons of the last few games.

  • It’s really good news that Wanyama is close to return. We’ve desperately missed a defensive CM this season. The teams with the best defensive records in the league this season all have specialist, quality CMs. You only have to look at how Chelsea suffered when Kante was injured earlier. In Poch’s first season we had Mason and Bentaleb in midfield and leaked goals. The following season we developed Dier in that role, in addition to recruiting Toby of course, and ended up with the best defensive record in the league. Last season we had Wanyama who was an improvement on Dier. Recently we have conceded the first goal, before half time, in almost every match, and ended up chasing the game. We need to get back to the basics of the last two seasons and build from the back. Don’t concede and take your opportunities when they arise. Dier may pass sideways and backwards most of the time but his main role (until Wanyama is fit) is to provide protection for our defence. Then let our attacking players do their job.

  • Good post gary. I also think Dembele’s loss of form gets overlooked when trying to disect our problems. When we have been at our best under Poch is when Moussa has been in their firing on all cylinders.

  • Burnley 0 – 3 Spurs! But I’d settle for the same result as last season. Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas folks. 🙂

  • Last night’s draw between Arsenal and Liverpool was the best result for us. A win today and we’re back in fifth place only a point behind Liverpool. We then have a run of five favourable matches (Southampton H, Swansea A, West Ham H, Everton H and Southampton A) before playing Man U. If we do well in those games we should be back in the top 4 and hopefully gain some momentum for 2018.

  • Burnley have had a good run of fairly comfortable fixtures over the past couple of months having only faced the Gooners and a resurgent Leicester aside from mostly lower table teams and they lost both of those. I have a feeling we might see a very comfortable away win, if they don’t park the home bus, which could start a poor run of results for Burnley as they come up against more top end teams over the coming weeks. I’m going for an optimistic 3-1 win for us.

  • “If we play as we did against City, then we’ll probably lose”. Said the actress to the bishop… Ha Ha Ha!

What do you get if you cross a ball with a Tottenham wing-back? … I don’t know mate. I haven’t got a bleedin’ Scooby Doo! A punishing and lethal counter attack from the opposition? Boom Boom!

    Here’s something truly hilarious…….

    Burnley 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur!

  • So, if Burnley can beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but Spurs can at least get a home draw with them, whilst sadly losing at Wembley to Chelsea but also win 3-0 away to the Toffees and yet Chelsea can only manage a 0-0 draw at Everton and yet Tottenham lose embarressingly to Man City who only drew with Everton and….. Tell me, what does all that say for the modern game of football, crazy transfer fees, the EPL and the poor, poor form of Dele Alli?

  • What if Bournemouth can get a good result at the Etihad and the Foxes get all 3 points at home to United?

  • Another 4 goals for City… Doing even better than the fantastic Foxes did when they ran away with it all…

  • This may be a knee jerk reaction, but I think we need a new manager. Sissoko, Davies and Dele start. Lamela, Moussa and Rose on the bench. With Sissoko playing, we’re effectively a man down. He’s not a CM, he’s not even decent anywhere on the pitch. Poch’s selection is going to make this game an uphill struggle…

  • City are no doubt an amazing team, but it’s no coincidence that they’re also the richest. Our model and there’s are worlds apart, sadly that’s also translated to the pitch…

  • It wasn’t City’s wealth that beat us last week. It was by better football, terrible Spurs defensive errors, clinical finishing from them and dodgy finishing from Tottenham.

  • I know we are winning, but we look awful. Our positioning is way off where we have been the last 2 seasons, we seemed to know where our players were last season, so many wasted passes, we look so nervous. Sissoko, once again I do not understand how you get into the team? What a shocking double miss. We clearly do not know how to play together, even Harry feels like he needs to shoot and not pass when the pass is on. This team really worries me, I do not think we are good enough for top 4 especially if we continue like this. I cannot wait till Victor and Toby are back, we need some leadership.

  • Can’t agree with posts on here. team selection is about using the squad over this busy period. I am no fan of Sissoko but Dembele cannot play two games in a row, Winks injured, who else is there for CM. I also think he is doing alright, although woeful in front of goal, but he is working hard and doing a job in the centre, pity we are in this position of having to rely on a average player though, but fair do’s he is doing a job today.

Aurier gave ball away again, but he is doing alright. Dele is playing better but needs to be careful after that yellow. I think ref got it right, it wasn’t a red, but risky from Dele.

Overall we are doing alright, but haven’t killed the game again. I would like to see Lamela on for at least half an hour, and think we need to really be aggressive in second half and get that 2nd goal asap because Burnley afre capable of nicking one back.

Sanchez again showing his class, so young and first season, what a player he is going to be.

Need a bit more from them to secure this and if we win we are knocking on top four door again. I don’t see Arsenal or Liverppol being any better than us, both inconsitent but I think Chelsea may just about get top four due to experience, so for me it’s between us, Liverpool and Arsenal, and if we can be top four after the festive season I think we will do everything to hold on to it, as we will have players back soon.

We can put this to bed if we go up a notch and if we don’t it will be nail biting end.
