WSL Report: Spurs 1-0 Liverpool

|

Spurs Women secured their first win on home soil this season and their second league win in three matches by overcoming Liverpool 1-0 in Leyton Orient’s Brisbane Road.

Spurs got off to a flyer when Celin Bizet’s cross was turned into her own net by Liverpool defender Niamh Fahey just after the 10-minute mark.

The home side was unlucky not to go into the half-time interval with a greater lead when first Drew Spence and then Ashleigh Neville hit the woodwork, with Spence hitting the post early on and Neville seeing a sumptuous effort come back off the crossbar when through on goal.

Bizet and Spence kept causing the visitors all sorts of problems but the score remained 1-0, with summer signing Nikola Karczewska hitting an effort when well-placed to double Spurs’ lead.

Liverpool were by far the inferior side but still had moments of their own, not least when Yana Daniels volleyed straight at Tinja-Riikka Korpela in the Spurs goal shortly before the hour mark.

Korpela was called into action again to keep out a shot from Liverpool’s Katie Stengel, but Spurs ultimately saw out a comfortable win that saw them move up to 7th.

Liverpool meanwhile remain in 9th, and winless since the impressive opening-day victory over champions Chelsea.

It wasn’t that comfortable in the second half, we could easily have regretted not scoring more when we dominated the first half.

TQ …. True, but some of the football we played was a step up from last season and we were worthy winners.

Hi Geof….we certainly look more of a threat in the final third now, I have been very impressed by Bizet.

Two side to this season to date: (a) the overall result has been pretty damned good as we’re solidly entrenched in the top three; (b) we we embarrassed in the match that meant the most–the NL derby. For me, each match vs. goons is equal to 8 or 10 vs other clubs, so the season so far is a wash.

Life is process, not just product, so an evaluation needs to be of the process, not just the score and place on the tables (PL and CL). For me, the process isn’t far enough along to know where we are or where we are headed. This 3-4-3 isn’t very satisfying, and far too often we see a team unable to get the ball to the front three in ways that lead to dangerous shots of goal. Good Lond, a match with no shots on goal! the team consistenly seems to look better when the third attacker is taken off in favor of an additional midfielder. We attack better with fewer attackers! Yet Mr. Conte persists in favoring the formation that has gotter the poorer results on the pitch.

Tentative evaluation: frustratingly satisfying. Or perhaps, satisfyingly frustrating. But it’s still too early in the process to judge by the product. An an odd year it will be, with a WC interval cutting the season into two quite separate halves. The second half might look little like the first half, with new signings in January, injuries picked up in Qatar, etc. I haven’t quite gotten my bearings yet. Hard to know what the rhythm will be across the full season.

And all this talk in 2022 about royalty in London and some seemingly grouchy dude they call King Charles. We all know that the real king is King Harry, no?

No, not that one with the red hair, but our King Harry, HK10–the one and only King in London. Harry Kane, the King of London football. Long Live the King! King Harry of WHL! And may he always reign from the thone at WHL.

Our King Harry deserves a dashing team that charges with spurs dug in.

Long Live Our King Harry! Let nothing rain on his reign.

    COYS.
