WSL Report: Reading 1-0 Spurs

|

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat yesterday afternoon in the Women’s Super League to strugglers Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium courtesy of a 12th-minute own-goal from Amy Turner.

Although Spurs won this fixture in this venue in the Conti Cup back in October, the Lilywhites never got going at all in a disappointing performance – one where an onlooker would not know which side was seventh, and which one was eleventh in the WSL.

The small lining to Amy Turner’s unfortunate header into her own net following a goalmouth scramble was that it was early enough in the match that Spurs had more than enough time to mount a comeback.

However, so wretched were the visitors that it was the hosts who threatened a second goal more than the visitors restoring parity, and Spurs were indebted to Rebecca Spencer for keeping the score at 1-0 with a string of impressive saves as the match wore on.

Rehanne Skinner responded to the underwhelming display with a treble substitution in the second half, including the introduction of Kerys Harrop and Karczewska, with the latter failing to beat the home side’s keeper late on when found by fellow substitute Harrop, and a goalmouth scramble failing to yield a fruitful outcome for Spurs.

The final whistle blew soon after, and a 4th WSL defeat of the season leaves Spurs in 7th and 12 points adrift of a Champions League place already.
