Would Be “Fantastic” But Poch’s Unsure On This Deal – “No New’s Is Good News”

|

Contract renewals at Tottenham Hotspur are almost as big a topic for the rumour mill as new January transfer window signings, but Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld probably take the most column inches on the former topic of conversation.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino met with the press yesterday to discuss the upcoming FA Cup third round clash with Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park and at least for these purposes, our Dane was the topic of conversation in the questioning.

Poch was his usual self when discussing the 26-year-old, especially given the form he’s again in for us this year that has seen six goals and nine assists returned in 25 matches, despite the games missed with injury complications hitting but he did have to admit, at this point, he didn’t know what the future held.

Speaking to Sky Sports he explained a new deal being signed would be ‘fantastic’.

“No news is good news. Who knows? I am not a person who suffers too much in this type of situation, because football is dynamic. Football is about interests that sometimes as a manager we cannot manage. It depends on many things. Different parties have interests. Of course Christian Eriksen is so important for us and you would like to have this kind of player with you. But it’s a negotiation with different parties, with different interests. It would be fantastic if Christian Eriksen committed to the club for a long time. If not, it’s his right to do what he wants to do.”

There’s not a lot he can say in reality as he’s not the one sitting at the table and he might know the ballpark of what’s being offered, as well as being asked for, but he’s right to try and step back as if he doesn’t have a say in that, then all he can do is let the player know he’s valued.
