Wolves 0-1 Spurs: Player Ratings – Dele returning to his old self

|

Nuno Espirito Santo returned to Molineux for the first time since leaving Wolves and becoming Spurs manager, and he left the ground with all three points as a Dele Alli penalty separated the two sides.

While we are yet to see the attacking Spurs side we were promised by Daniel Levy, Fabio Paratici and Nuno himself, two wins and two clean sheets to start off the season cannot be frowned upon.

Here are our player ratings:

Hugo Lloris – 7

A clean sheet on his 300th appearance for Spurs, making some important saves and showcasing his expert level of distribution to get the team away on the counter-attack.

Japhet Tanganga – 5

Struggled to deal with Adama Traore all game – a disappointing performance after his man of the match display against City. However, this will be an important lesson to the young man and fortunately his display didn’t come at the cost of the three points.

Davinson Sanchez – 6

Struggled to help stop Traore on the right-hand side, but he did make some good blocks and tackles. A little bit erratic at times, but the signs that the coaching team are trying to make that side of his game disappear are still there.

Eric Dier – 6

While Dier also made some important tackles, clearances and blocks, his job in the defence is also to organise the backline and the team let Wolves have way too many shots, and a clean sheet was perhaps very lucky.

Sergio Reguilon – 7

Didn’t get beat too many times and the majority of Wolves’ chances came from the right-hand side of defence. Carried the ball away from danger by marauding forward on a number of occasions.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 6

Another player who bounced off Traore throughout the game, however towards the end of the match he redeemed himself by putting in some big challenges and almost scoring after nutmegging his marker.

Oliver Skipp – 6

Another learning curve for the promising midfielder, who looked shaky at times but extremely composed at others. Made a sensational tackle on Traore late in the first half but was very unfairly penalised for it and booked.

Dele Alli – 8

A man-of-the-match performance from a player desperate to return to his old self again after a miserable few seasons. An excellent rum from deep drew the contact from Jose Sa and then he dispatched the penalty cooly. Made some very important tackles in midfield to breakup play and get Spurs back on the front foot.

Lucas Moura – 5

Didn’t have the same impact as he did against Manchester City and was quiet for most of his time on the pitch. Marcal had him pocketed particularly throughout the first half.

Heung-min Son – 5

Struggled to put his stamp on the game and lead the line. The Wolves defenders dealt with him well but the chances that the Korean forward did get he couldn’t take.

Steven Bergwijn – 7

Bergwijn is growing in confidence more and more each week and yesterday he looked very tricky and sharp. Could have been on the scoresheet too but for a brilliant save from Sa.

SUBS

Giovani Lo Celso – 6

Did well to retain possession and add a little confidence into the midfield – giving the defence more of a rest having been put under pressure all game.

Harry Kane – 6

Came on to a mixed reception but made an impact with his ability to hold-up play. Should have buried the chance set-up by Bergwijn not long after entering the game.

Harry Winks – N/A

Didn’t have enough time to make an impact.

Sorry , didn’t see Dele as man of the match. Is this just because he was involved in the goal? Other than that I saw little of him in attack, hardly any astute passes, or beating a man to make space. Yes he had lots to do in defence and did this reasonably well, mainly by blocking tackles rather than coming away with the ball. But with Skippy and Hojbjerg alongside him I think he needs to show more of the attacking side of his game to nail down his place in the team.
