Wolves and Brighton linked with Danny Rose as Newcastle drop out of transfer race

|

According to the Telegraph, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton & Hove Albion may be interested in Danny Rose after Newcastle United pulled out of the race for his signature.

With the 30-year-old in the last year of his deal at Tottenham and being surplus to requirements, a sale looks on the cards this summer. Rose’s next destination is unknown, however.

Why did Newcastle withdraw their interest?

Uncertain. Rose was publicly keen to turn his loan permanent at Newcastle and we were happy to let him go, but things fizzled. There isn’t a public reason for their U-turn on the left-back, but it may have been down to their transfer policy.

Rose is 30 years of age, struggled for consistency before the loan and earns more than £3m-a-year, so Newcastle may not have considered him to be value for money. The fact they’re set to sign Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis (aged 22) highlights that they went in a completely different direction.

Should we sell Rose?

Yes. Rose clearly isn’t happy at Tottenham and Jose Mourinho doesn’t have any plans for the 30-year-old next season. Player and manager came to blows on the Amazon ‘All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur’ documentary too, so a departure suits all involved.

Ben Davies and Ryan Sessegnon will be our left-back picks moving forward and we have to cash in on Rose this summer so we don’t lose him on a free in 2021, so it’s the right call to let him go. Rose has made 214 appearances for us since his move from Leeds in 2007, but it’s time to move on.

Why do Wolves and Brighton want him?

The Telegraph say Wolves are looking for a left-back as Jonny Castro Otto is recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury while Brighton may be planning for Bernardo’s potential exit.

Wolves have Ruben Vinagre as cover for Jonny, but he only amassed 703 minutes of Premier League football in 2018/19 and 644 minutes in 2019/20, so Nuno Espirito Santo doesn’t quite trust him enough yet. Whether they’d really bring in Rose to plug the gap remains to be seen.

Brighton replacing Bernardo for a player in the eve of their career wouldn’t be the smartest transfer move either, so it’s uncertain if they’d make a concerted effort to sign Rose. Bad news for us.
