Why Tottenham won’t make transfer decision on highly-rated forward – opinion

|

According to Calciomercato, Tottenham are planning an approach for Josip Brekalo. The Vfl Wolfsburg forward is valued at £14m and has been a regular for the Bundesliga outfit this season, making 12 appearances in all competitions. Brekalo’s form at club level has led to him making his Croatia debut too, but it’s unlikely Tottenham will look to bring the 20-year-old to London.

Mauricio Pochettino could make a permanent signing in the January transfer window, but it’s more likely to be a defender or central midfielder rather than an attacker. Brekalo has operated on the left wing for Wolfsburg, contributing three goals this season, but wouldn’t stand a chance of getting in the Tottenham first-team.

Spurs have Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura, Heung-min Son and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou for options in attack, so the highly-rated Bundesliga star isn’t going to improve the squad. Brekalo has five years left on his current deal at the Volkswagen Arena too, so Wolfsburg aren’t under any pressure to cash in on the 20-year-old.

That means it might cost significantly more than £14m to procure Brekalo’s signature, not that Spurs would be in the race for his signature, so this rumour may not have legs.
