Who is Joe Rodon? How much will he cost? What can Tottenham fans expect?

|

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are interested in Joe Rodon and may have to battle West Ham United to procure his signature. The 22-year-old is a regular for Swansea City and has represented Wales’ national team, so he could have a bright future under the right guidance.

After failing to agree a deal with Inter Milan for Milan Skiriniar while being rejected by Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger just before the Premier League transfer window shut, we have no choice but to turn our attention to the Championship as the Football League transfer window shuts in three days.

Who is Rodon?

Rodon is a talented central defender who rose through the youth ranks to Swansea’s first-team in 2018 and has gone on to make 54 appearances in all competitions.

The 22-year-old was an unused substitute in 2016’s FA Cup defeat to Oxford United and 2017’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, but he made his debut in the Swans’ 1-0 win over Preston North End on August 11, 2018.

Rodon made 27 Championship appearances that season, missing 10 games due to a metatarsal fracture while being an unused substitute for the remaining nine.

In 2019/20, he missed 15 league games between October 2019 and January 2020 due to an ankle injury and was out for another eight games between June 2020 and July 2020 after suffering a setback. Rodon made only 21 Championship appearances that season.

He’s got four caps to his name for Wales too.

What can fans expect?

As shown in the Championship last season, Rodon is dominant in the air (73 aerial duels won), puts his body on the line to snuff out chances (blocked 22 shots), seldom gives away a foul (one foul every 138 minutes), comfortable in possession (81.9% of passes completed), effectively clears his lines (113 clearances), is adept at turning over possession (tackle or interception every 33 minutes) and is seldom beaten in a one-on-one (dribbled past once every 224 minutes).

It’s easy to see why we’re interested.

How much will he cost?

Football Insider say Swansea have requested £15m for Rodon. We’re also considering a cash + player deal and could loan the defender back for the season.

It doesn’t appear Rodon will get in ahead of Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld or Japhet Tanganga, so he may benefit from another season at the Liberty Stadium.
