We can still do more, we can play better – Dier

Spurs defender Eric Dier has made a fantastic start to life under Nuno Espirito Santo, securing three clean sheets as the team sit top the Premier League after three games, being the only side left with a 100% record.

His partnership with Colombian centre-back Davinson Sanchez came under heavy criticism from pundits and fans last season due to their proneness to making a mistake and erratic defending, but they have looked very stable and solid so far this season.

The arrival of Cristian Romero from Atalanta is likely to push the pair this season, as well as the other players in the team who are also being pushed by the other new signings – and Dier believes the squad are already reaping the benefits.

“We’re all really happy, most importantly to get the win before the international break, and finish with three wins (from the first three games),” said Dier.

“I think we can still do more, we can play better, probably we should have scored a few more goals today, but that will come.”

On Sunday, the defence remained sturdy and organised as Spurs prevented Watford from having any real sniff of goal, as the defence grabbed their third clean sheet in a row for the first time in a while.

“Watford have very good attacking players, they started well, we had to contain them a little, we didn’t start the best,” continued Dier. “We controlled the game throughout, really managed to nullify their counter-attack, and that’s down to our positioning, especially our midfielders. Skippy and Pierre have been fantastic in all the work they do, so, yes, it’s been a good start.

“We’ve had very different games, and this was the first one where we had a lot more control. We want to build on that and have more control in every game. Within the three games, we’ve kept our principles, and our principles are the same, the manager really emphasises that, and we know together, as a unit, we can be very strong.”
