Very solid performance by Spurs but an unfortunate result as Ronaldo has his best game of the season against us. We do desperately require top notch wingbacks. So many times the delivery into the attacking box is poor or hits the defender. Imagine if we had both right and left sided high end performers who could set up goal scoring opportunities on a consistent basis. This three back system cries out for it.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Whilst we laugh at Chelsea because of their current predicament (they will be absolutely fine once the club is sold) we continue to embarrass ourselves on and off the pitch with laughable decisions off the pitch and inept ones on the pitch. As usual the last laugh is on our joke of a club.

  • wentworth says:

As I said previously, what is the point in running down the clock when we are losing. Conte brings on Winks and Bergwijn with minutes to go.
There is no way they are match winners. Again this shows the complete lack of depth in our squad.
As usual, my heart sank when the two time wasters came on. We really have to sort this out and banish these two from the bench.
It really is time to give some academy players a go. We have Brighton on Wednesday. A good time to try something different. Brighton can’t score for toffee so a nice easy game for us.

  • Love totty says:

Disappointing result but by all accounts a competitive performance at least, losing only to the brilliance of Ronaldo. I’ve long been of the opinion that Uniteds better squad will see them finish above us and Arsenal and so it is proving. It has got to be encouraging though that we held our own possession wise which I presume reflects well on Bentacurs influence. Whilst I think 4th is beyond us, pipping Arsenal and Spam must be our goal to get 5th. Ah well. At least Ireland won the egg contest.

    • PompeyYid says:

      LT…good post but!

Ireland, my second country, only won cos England stupidly had a player “Red carded” for what I believe was an accident, in the first 82secs of the game, thus playing with 14men, that is the only reason they won.

  • Geofspurs says:

I thought Conte set the team up well and it was a very enjoyable game with a good performance from Spurs; a performance that we can take a lot of positives from and indicates we are going in the right direction.

  • Niall D says:

Yep as BS said in the last thread a draw may have been a fairer result.
It is margins which win or lose these games, Ronaldo wasn’t offside, Davies was.
It was a fairly even game which I feel we played pretty well and for long periods Man U parked the bus.
We were worth a draw today
Still must laugh at BBC coverage, didn’t show our disallowed goal, and the pundits gushed about Man U for another 10 minutes, not for the first time.
This was a fairly even game, as has been said a lapse of defensive concentration lost us the first goal, they were a bit lucky for their second, the third was poor.
With that said our strikers were off the mark today.

  • 123spurs says:

Another spursy, bottleham, made average Ronaldo look like god. Conte lost yet again, please tell him the players you have cant play your formation. Just another jose type failure, copy and paste.

  • Geofspurs says:

Unless Arsenal implode it looks like we are in a battle for fifth spot.

123 …. Did you actually watch the game? It was an impressive performance away at Old Trafford, in my opinion. We will win many more games than we lose if we play like this. Again, in my opinion, the best team lost. Of course the media will not give us the praise we deserve because of its love affair with United. It’s football.

    • PompeyYid says:

      So very true there Geofspurs.

Mind it would have helped if our “So called” worldie players had turned up. COYS

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

The fact that some people think we played well says everything about where we are as a club. We were up against a team there for the taking and we failed miserably. For all our possession we created almost nothing. The defending was appalling and our final third decision making and execution was appalling. We are an average Premier League team with one great player, a couple of good players and a bunch of bang average ones.

  • jod says:

Quite honestly I don’t think Arteta will have seen anything in that game from either side to worry him. Yes Ronaldo was good but how often will he perform like that ? We had the opportunities to get something from the game but couldn’t take them.

I realised that the Spurs game clashed with the England v Ireland rugby. So I recorded the rugby while I got depressed watching Spurs. Then I switched on the recording and 80 seconds in we were down to 14 men, game over. At this point I just switched off the TV. Sometimes its just not your day.

  • Allan says:

I couldn’t watch the game so expected a win but unfortunately the teams W L sequence is continuing .
I kept in touch with the BBC text system and it appeared that United played well in the first half while the second was ours .
I was quite cross when I saw the final result but on reflection felel that we have improved greatly since earlier in the season we were a rudderless team losing to them 3 0 . A dreadful performance .
4th is beyond us but a 5th or 6th finish would be satisfactory giving us a platform on which to build for next year .
Apparently Conte has given an assurance that he will be our manager next year which is good news .

  • PompeyYid says:

Yes! even for me, the ever optimistic, 4th place has gone now, unless miracles happen of course, but 5th is a possibility and at the worst 6th, so really not to bad for a transition season. COYS

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

PompryYid – another transitional season How many more transitional seasons are we going to have. I suspect the next one will be next season after Conte walks at the end of this one.

  • jod says:

Right 5th or 6th is good enough. That way we’ll get to play a lot of extra games sapping any attempt to get a top four place without enough extra revenue to strengthen the squad or the extra status to attract the calibre of players we want. The next best thing to champions league football is no European football at all, but lets pretend a handicap is actually a prize. Of course Arsenal, who now look strong favourites for fourth, were a shambles at the start of the season. But with no European games Arteta has had time on the training ground to whip them into shape.

  • Niall D says:

I know we’re getting away from Spurs, but it deas show the rich vein of sports knowledge on this, site.
PY rare disagreement here M8, same happened to Ireland last year against England at Aviva Dublin, Man sent off but funnily enough similar score.
    Ireland won convincingly
England did play well at home with a man down, but lost, by quite a margin at the end.
Who knows with the extra man, would the crowd have been so vocal, who knows.
But England to their credit played well, let’s hope they beat the French. 😉

    • PompeyYid says:

Niall I do agree with you, I was only pointing out a “red” after 82secs, 79+mins with 14, its hard, 15-18, at 20 mins or so I could live with, great battling by the English and then the jesus we are effin effed took hold, thus the greater margin by a very good Irish side.

Thought ya man, sorry forgot his name, rather Doh! of me, going off at the end taking a massive applaus was fantastic, well played for your career.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Jod- Arsenal were not a shambles. They had some very good young players coming through and the basis of a decent squad. They also spent £150m despite having less turnover than us and no income from European football. It’s called ambition. Everton, Villa and Wolves amongst others also had no European football. They are not exactly pulling up any trees. Now that fourth is unlikely, do you expect us to deliberately lose games to avoid European football at all. What sort of mentality is that creating at the club.

  • wentworth says:

We have to accept that we have an uninspiring squad. The new lads have given a little hope but we are still stuck with our “super” subs taking up valuable space on the bench. ( Namely Winks, Berweijn, Emerson, Sanchez and co). Conte ….. at least give our youngsters White and Scarlet ( usually 90 seconds) some encouragement. They now have splinters in their backsides.,There must be other Academy stars ( Devine, Paskotsi) who more about them than the dreadful Winks and clumsy Emerson.
Yep it looks as though 5th orv6th will be our best or worst position.
We have Brighton on Wednesday. Perhaps Potter will loan us Lamptey, Cucurella and Bissouma for Winks, Emerson and Bergweijn.
The above post says Man Utd were lucky and we were solid. They scored 3 excellent goals and we had an own goal and dubious pen. They had a dubious pen amazingly turned down.
According to the stats, no one in our team got higher than a 7 score with most getting a 5 or 6.I think my description of workmanlike sums us up.

  • Niall D says:

Must agree DH, for me winning creates winning, If that makes sense, had we played like yesterday and got a win or even the much deserved draw, it could’ve been a springboard for us.
Looking at your mention of Everton did they not spend quite a bit of money to “push on” last season and look where its left em.
For me if a player can see progress within the club for example, if Conte does actually manage to get a string of wins and good performances under his belt + a Euro position for next season then we may be able to lure decent players, I can’t see it happening if we lose most games from now on and finish say 10th, who would want to come to a club that isn’t at least pushing for the European places.
The person banging on about no European football wants us to sign next level players even though we’d be sitting mid table 🤣🤣🤣😂
    Just my thoughts m8

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Great post Niall. Totally agree with you. Nothing wrong with The Europa League. It’s actually quite a strong competition.

  • TK says:

We do not have a Russian oligarch as an owner. That’s enough of a victory for this week. Bad enough we have ENIC, but thanks to the gods that our soul wasn’t sold to the devil just for some cups over the past few years. I much prefer who and what we are.

If we steadily improve over the rest of the season and next, I’ll be content. I’m already quite happy that we don’t have some oligarch as an owner. Let’s see what we can accomplish as a simple club trying to complete without infusions of dirty money.
