Transfer Round-Up: Centre-Back Links Re-surface

Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a centre-back has been well-publicised for a while now, and it seems like rumours regarding certain familiar names will not go away.

Indeed, having been incessantly linked with Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni for what feels like an eternity, the well-touted name of Josko Gvardial has once again been on the name of continental journalists discussing Spurs’ centre-back hunt.

Today, Tuttomercatoweb (in Italian) has reported that 20-year-old centre-back Gvardiol – currently of Red Bull Leipzig in the Bundesliga and on international duty in Qatar in the World Cup with Croatia – has not disappeared off Tottenham’s radar, and, rather than put them off, the interest in his services from the likes of Chelsea has made Spurs more determined to make a harder push for the left-footed youngster’s signature.

Interestingly, the report outlines how Gvardiol’s Croatian compatriot – Ivan Perisic – has been acting as a not-so-secret agent of sorts by attempting to seduce the youngster to join him in North London.

With Leipzig reportedly holding out for a fee of around £75 million [GiveMeSport] for Gvardol – not to mention the queue of elite sides lining up for his services – this one appears to be a long shot.

However, with Spurs actively on the lookout for the ‘perfect’ left-sided centre-back, and Gvardiol himself adopting the diplomatic “never say never” mentality when quizzed about a potential transfer this year, this one is certainly one to keep in mind as January approaches…
