It is seemingly becoming apparent that Victor Wanyama’s time at Tottenham is coming to an end.
The Kenyan midfielder has been continuously linked with a move away from north London this summer, and the latest update from Football Insider seems to indicate that Wanyama will be out the exit door before the closure of the European transfer window.
Indeed, it always seemed like Wanyama moving on was always going to happen after the club-record signing of Tanguy Ndombele. However, as one player leaves Spurs, another name can be allowed to be brought further into the first-team picture to fill the void, and that man could be 18-year-old Olivier Skipp.
The teenage midfielder made his first Premier League start for Spurs last season, playing in front of a cold and wet Wembley Stadium crowd who didn’t know what to expect from yet another kid from the academy Mauricio Pochettino had decided to take a punt on, and just like Harry Winks and Kyle Walker-Peters, Skipp impressed.
The Spurs manager waxed lyrical about the midfielder following the 1-0 win, saying to members of the press via The Evening Standard: “He was fantastic. I think he played like a 30-year-old man.” and from there, Skipp made 11 more first-team appearances that season as stats from Transfermarkt show.
The summer of 2019 saw Skipp handed a new squad number from 52 to 29, an unofficial sign that the youngster had been promoted to the first-team after an impressive debut season in professional football.
With the midfielder coming on as a late substitute in both of Spurs’ Premier League fixtures so far this season, there is a strong possibility that Skipp is in line for a big second season under Pochettino, and with Wanyama seemingly likely to depart the club this summer, it appears like the Argentine coach has found his latest youngster to forge into a superstar.
