Transfer boost for Tottenham with Callum Wilson ‘keen to join’, Spurs ‘favourites’ to land £20m man

|

According to Paul Brown of the Daily Star, Tottenham are ‘favourites’ to land Callum Wilson and believe the 28-year-old is ‘keen to join’ them this summer. Spurs may have to battle West Ham United and Newcastle United to procure Wilson’s signature, but the Daily Star say they’re currently leading the race.

Why is Wilson leaving Bournemouth?

Ambition. Bournemouth finished 18th in the Premier League with 34 points from 38 games, resulting in them being relegated to the Championship. Wilson is far too good for the second tier (46 Championship games, 20 goals, 13 assists), so he’s keen to return to the top-flight.

Wilson still has three years remaining on his deal at Dean Court, but there are plenty of clubs willing to pick him up this summer and Bournemouth aren’t going to stand in his way.

The 28-year-old has an England career to think about too, having featured in October 2019 while being in the squad during November’s Euro 2020 qualifiers, so he’ll need to be playing at the top level to give himself a chance of another callup.

Is he good enough for us?

Wilson has made 187 appearances in all competitions since joining Bournemouth for £3.33m from Coventry City in 2014, scoring 67 goals with 30 assists – one goal/assist per 1.93 games. In the Premier League, he’s bagged 41 goals and made 16 assists in 126 games – 1 goal/assist per 2.21 games.

The 28-year-old is contributing a goal every other game on average and isn’t a flat-track bully either. Wilson has scored against Arsenal (6 apps, 3 goals), Liverpool (4 apps, 2 goals), Everton (6 apps, 2 goals), Manchester United (7 apps, 1 goal), Chelsea (3 apps, 1 goal), Manchester City (3 apps, 1 goal). He’s fired blanks against Tottenham (6 apps, 0 goals) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (2 apps, 0 goals), however.

How much will he cost?

The Daily Star say Wilson’s asking price is £20m while Spotrac say he earns £60k-per-week/£3.12m-a-year at Bournemouth. The Cherries’ relegation will cut the value of their players, but it may be good business for us to land a prolific English striker for so little.

We don’t have lucrative funds to bring in a lot of players, so being shrewd in the transfer market is a good plan. Wilson has a respectable goal record and won’t break the bank, so a deal makes perfect sense.
