Tottenham’s £26m transfer decision is the stuff of nightmares for Daniel Levy – opinion

|

According to Corriere dello Sport (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham are considering a £26m deal with Sampdoria for Joachim Andersen. The 22-year-old has made a name for himself in Serie A since his 2017-arrival from FC Twente and could be on a number of clubs’ radar.

Andersen has made 20 appearances in all competitions for Sampdoria, making one assist. The centre-back is a rising star in Europe and could have a bright future, but it may not be at Tottenham. Funds are tight after the stadium build, with ongoing delays draining resources.

Chairman Daniel Levy has two central defenders out of contract next summer who may be in need of replacing too, so the prospect of releasing £26m in addition to the hit he’d take if both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen left for free wouldn’t bear worth thinking about.

Tottenham must tie the Belgian pair down to new contracts, otherwise Spurs could be left very short in defence without any money to show for it. Having to sanction a move for Andersen would be the stuff of nightmares for Daniel Levy but it could soon be his reality.

The Londoners have Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier who can fill the centre-back role, but Alderweireld and Vertonghen are stellar players.
