Tottenham won’t sign £50m England international in January – opinion

|

Football.London believe Manchester City distancing themselves from Ben Chilwell is good news for Tottenham’s alleged pursuit of the Leicester City man ahead of the January transfer window.

Pep Guardiola was linked with a £50m deal for the England international with Benjamin Mendy currently sidelined with injury, but it appears the Sky Blues will instead use internal solutions at left-back.

Tottenham and Arsenal were said be competing for his signature, but Chilwell would surely not be on Mauricio Pochettino’s radar unless one of Danny Rose or Ben Davies was leaving. It’s hard to see Spurs paying £50m for the left-back too.

Rose has recently returned to the starting lineup and impressed in the Champions League against Barcelona. The 28-year-old averages a tackle or interception every 20 minutes in the Premier League this season and provides a much more offensive option than Davies.

He’s also got three years left on his deal and doesn’t appear to be the subject of interest from either Manchester City or Manchester United anymore so a Tottenham departure looks unlikely.

As for Davies, the Welshman also has three years remaining on his contract and has made 18 appearances in all competitions this season. Pochettino clearly has a need for both players in the squad and won’t pay £50m for competition.
