Tottenham won’t make £21m transfer decision on 21-year-old Mousa Dembele replacement – opinion

|

According to Calciomercato, Tottenham are considering signing £21m-rated midfielder Nicolo Barella as a replacement for Mousa Dembele who is currently out of action until January 2019 and may be leaving the club the following summer. However, it seems unlikely that Spurs would line up a very young and unproven replacement without ensuring the existing player is actually leaving.

There have numerous reports on Dembele that suggest he isn’t going to sign a contract extension with the London outfit and could be on his way out of the club at the end of the season. Pochettino, however, hasn’t publicly confirmed such news or said Tottenham are in the market for a central-midfielder which suggests they won’t sign a new player until one leaves – opening the door for summer activity, as mid-season transfers are hard to get overt the line.

Barella has made 87 appearances in all competitions for Cagliari, scoring and creating nine goals. The 21-year-old is a regular with the Serie A outfit, making 12 league appearances this season and has four more years left on his contract. The Italian international signed a new deal in January, so it’s hard to see Cagliari parting company and the player himself seeking an exit.
