Spurs leading race to land “explosive” £54m playmaker dubbed the next Frank Lampard – report

Tottenham Hotspur have been mooted with a rather exciting move this week ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Corriere della Sera, the north Londoners are one of a few teams leading the race to sign Roma playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo despite the player wanting to remain in the Italian capital.

The 21-year-old’s relationship with manager Paulo Fonseca appears to be strained, but the Serie A outfit will not accept fewer than €50m-€60m (£45m-£54m) for his signature.

Can Zaniolo be the star to fill Erisken's void at Spurs?

Absolutely!

No way!

Juventus, as well as his former club Inter Milan, are also in the hunt.

It’s claimed that Jose Mourinho sees Zaniolo as a perfect fit for the Premier League due to his physical attributes and determination.

The midfield maestro is one of Europe’s most exciting youngsters having already racked up two goals in five caps for the Italy national team whilst this campaign, he’s provided seven goals and five assists for Roma – also averaging 2.3 dribbles, 1.7 shots and 1.1 key passes across both domestic and European competitions, via WhoScored.

Spurs are yet to truly replace Christian Eriksen with Giovani Lo Celso only managing to deliver one assist in the Premier League all season, clinching Zaniolo could be a wise move.

'When he scored the goal the game finished for him. After that I needed 11 players for my defensive organisation and I had just 10.'

He’s been compared to both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard by former Inter coach Stefano Vecchi whilst Roma legend Francesco Totti once gave him a glowing endorsement indeed, saying: “He has explosive strength and technique, and everything it takes to become a truly great player.”

Zaniolo’s ability to fill the playmaker void is emphasised by Italian football expert Mina Rzouki, who added: “Zaniolo is a trequartista, he is someone who plays in the hole in attacking midfield. He is turning out to be an exceptional talent.”

If Daniel Levy and Spurs can somehow figure out a way to splash the cash on the Roma star, then they absolutely should.
