Chief Football Writer for the Independent Miguel Delaney is reporting that Toby Alderweireld is one of two centre backs that Manchester United have targeted in the summer as they look to strengthen their squad.
Our no.4`s future at the club is reportedly uncertain. The Times said last month that the Belgian could be sold in the summer due to a contract dispute. With Toby wanting £150k, and the club offering £110k plus bonuses, it seems that discussions over a new deal have stalled.
Poch is also said to be happy to allow the 29 year old to leave if a new contract can`t be agreed. The reasoning for this is likely to be the £25m release clause that the Guardian have said would be triggered if the club take up their option to extend his deal until 2020.
Currently Toby`s deal expires in 2019 with no buyout clause, and the summer market would be the last chance for us to get a decent fee for the player if no new deal is signed.
Whether United do make a move for our defender, we`ll have to wait and see. The other centre half target is Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona who already has an active release clause of close to £50m. The Frenchman could be the target that the Manchester club favour as they won`t have to enter negotiations to make the deal happen.
