Tottenham midfielder set for Queens Park Rangers transfer after turning down Middlesbrough

|

According to Sean Gallagher of talkSPORT, Luke Amos is nearing a move to Queens Park Rangers after rejecting a transfer to Middlesbrough. The 23-year-old has long been out of favour at Tottenham and fell behind the pecking order in midfield, so an exit has been on the cards for a while.

What’s the latest?

Gallagher says Tottenham and QPR have agreed a transfer fee and Amos will sign a three-year deal with the Hoops after rejecting Middlesbrough’s proposal. He was reportedly shown around QPR’s training ground on Saturday and should be confirmed as a Hoops player in the coming days.

As for why Tottenham are finally ready to cash in, Amos’ contract expires next year so he could leave on a free transfer in 2021 unless sold this summer or in January – a new deal wouldn’t be on the table given he’s featured just once for the first-team back in 2018.

The midfielder’s market value is only £1.08m, but every penny counts in Tottenham’s situation. We need to generate funds for new signings and are considering offloading Danny Rose, Serge Aurier, Juan Foyth, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Moussa Sissoko this summer, so anything from Amos’ sale is a bonus.

Why didn’t he make the grade at Spurs?

Amos made just one first-team appearance since signing a professional contract in 2015, coming off the bench in our 2-1 win over Newcastle United (August 11, 2018). He was an unused substitute in the EFL Cup defeat to Liverpool (October 25, 2016) and Europa League win over APOEL Nicosia (December 6, 2017) before that.

Things haven’t worked out for Amos at Tottenham, but he did once show a lot of promise. The 23-year-old impressed in pre-season ahead of the 2018/19 campaign, made his first-team debut against Newcastle but suffered a knee injury for the reserves which kept him out for the remainder.

Upon his return, there was no room in the senior squad for Amos and he went on to join QPR on loan (July 1, 2019 – June 31, 2020). He was a regular for the Hoops and impressed under Mark Warburton, so much so that the Rangers manager returned for Amos this summer. The pair will soon be renewing acquaintances.
