Tottenham given transfer boost in their pursuit of Said Benrahma

|

Tottenham have been given a transfer boost in their pursuit of Said Benrahma, with the Mirror reporting that West Ham United don’t have the funds ready to sign the Brentford forward. The Hammers won’t be able to match Benrahma’s asking price without offloading existing players.

Who is Benrahma?

A 24-year-old wide-man who has spent two years at Brentford and could be on the move this summer. Benrahma joined the Bees from OGC Nice for £1.53m and has gone on to make 91 appearances in all competitions, scoring 28 goals with 27 assists – one goal or assist every 1.65 games.

The Algerian international is coming off the back of an outstanding season at Brentford that has seen him score 17 goals and make 10 assists in 46 appearances across the board. Benrahma didn’t get off the mark until October, but he didn’t go longer than three games without contributing a goal after that.

TalkSPORT say Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Leeds United and West Ham are interested in the 24-year-old, but his asking price keeps changing. The Mirror valued him at £16m but talkSPORT believe it’s closer to £25m. Benrahma’s valuation is likely to be at the top end given his form.

What will he bring to the Tottenham squad?

Goals, assists, pace and skills. Benrahma has made 139 successful dribbles, created 97 chances and had 175 shots.

We’re not short of options out wide with Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, Heung-min Son and Jack Clarke, but Lamela isn’t prolific (25 PL games, two goals, three assists), Son has sometimes operated as a centre-forward and Clarke has been on the periphery. Bergwijn has only scored three goals in 16 games too.

There’s definitely space for Benrahma to come in, and he would be a stark improvement on the squad.

Summary

Chelsea and Arsenal’s interest in Benrahma makes our job harder to land his signature, but he looks worth the trouble. The 24-year-old was outstanding last season and has all the attributes to be an asset, so Jose Mourinho should beg Daniel Levy to meet Brentford’s demands.

Benrahma can operate in a variety of roles in attack too, so he’ll also bring versatility to the squad.
