Toby Alderweireld speaks out about Tottenham future, reveals whether he’s happy

Toby Alderweireld spoke out about his Tottenham future, revealing that he’s happy at the club and not thinking about leaving just yet. The 30-year-old is out of contract in less than 18 months and isn’t close to putting pen to paper on a long-term extension.

Alderweireld’s deal initially expired this summer before Tottenham triggered a 12-month extension, but the Belgian international’s new contract came with a £25m release clause that lasts until the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

Manchester United and Barcelona are among the clubs who have been linked with the central defender, but Alderweireld didn’t want to talk about the prospect of him leaving the club. He’s focused purely on ending this season strongly and will discuss his future when the campaign comes to a close.

He told Sky Sports: “There’s a lot to play for this season. And in the end I have a year contract left at Spurs, so I don’t look further than this season. Other things I don’t know. I am very happy at Spurs, so we will see what the future brings.

“I still feel very fit. I think I played a lot of minutes this season so I showed that I am fit – I don’t feel 30, I feel younger. So as I said, I am very happy and I just try to watch game-by-game. This season there is a lot to play for so I will give my best for that.”

Alderweireld has made 147 appearances in all competitions since joining Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

He’s featured in 38 matches across the board this season, missing only three league games and one in the Champions League. Pochettino won’t want to lose Alderweireld, but it’s hard to see a club not meeting his release clause.
