Weather warning, a HurriKane was spotted in Manchester.

  • Niall D says:

Hi Danny thank for another thread, here we are, we’ve just won against Man C, a pretty good result by all accounts, yet those who were so quick to condemn our team against Wolves and Southampton, now appear very slow to praise both our team and our manager in our approach to this game.
As I said in an earlier post, let’s be balanced, if we did bad we call it, but if we get a good result equally you gotta, call it.
But there they are back in the woodwork again, because there’s nothing bad to say.
If that makes em happy, I dunno.
However good result, I enjoyed how we played, I noticed that, no Winks, No Sanchez until the end funnily enough better play and good result.

  • Geofspurs says:

ND …. That’s true. The same applies to the many on here that wanted Kane to move on …. because playing for a poor team was his fault!!

I quite enjoyed this game! lol

  • Drdrums11 says:

Weโ€™re MCโ€™s bogie team and their nightmare. The results always seem better without Winks in the lineup. Real Italian style win w the counter punch. Dier and Romero together defending is going to make us much more difficult to give up goals. Really nice to be happy on this one as the past few games have been miserable.

  • Niall D says:

    Geof
I was among those who wanted Kane to go at that time, again I’ll say it, I among others felt that he is, around his optimum value just now, and aparrently given that at the time we needed to sell in order to buy, selling was our best option, also if we’re all honest it’s just now that Kane has settled down, and was indeed poor, mentally and physically until Christmas. And looked like he had downed tools.
He has indeed hit form again and I welcome it, with that said jf he wishes to go, I’ll wish him well.
BTW, its still mostly the same “poor team” around him so what’s changed the team or him.
    Busy enjoying the result.

  • Geofspurs says:

ND …. Nothing has changed. That’s my point …. when the team plays better so does Kane. He will continue to be up and down until we play more consistently better football. He was brilliant under MP and would be brilliant at City. But he can’t do it on his own. I believe that to describe him as ‘ downing tools’ does him a huge injustice, and one which he cannot respond to.

    • Love totty says:

Nial, we all express our feelings in our own way, no need for condescension and I told you so. I enjoyed the result immensely but how can anyone enjoy one’s team being totally outclassed for 90 minutes. But for HK, who btw I never once wanted to lose, we would have been well beaten. Of course I appreciate that the other players excelled themselves, some very good indeed, but does not erase the memory of recent abject performances. My praiseis reserved for consistency but I do take hope from this showing of determination and commitment.

  • jod says:

A lot to say after that game. Firstly it highlights what has always been our problem. Ardiles said about his team that on their day they could beat anyone but on another day lose to anyone. That’s been the story throughout the 40 years I’ve been going to White Hart Lane. It has cost us at least two titles, once when Leicester won it, once when Everton did. Beating City doesn’t compensate for losing against Southampton and Wolves. The maths of league football is simple, its not who you beat its how many you win.

Until a manager can eradicate the inconsistency we will always under achieve. I said when Conte arrived I wasn’t sure why he had taken the job, I’m still not. He’s always been a short term, quick fix manager. That was never an option at Spurs and his comments suggest he understands that. So is he planning to stay around longer ? your guess is as good as mine. If he does stay on he would have a chance of building that consistency.

As far as the players go the defensive discipline was the outstanding thing. Its funny how for all the criticism Dier gets we defend much better when he’s playing. Conte has made it clear he wants Dier to organise the defence. For all his ability that’s a job Romero doesn’t seem able to do. Of course it helps that the Kane/Son partneship seems to be back, of form they will always score goals. The new guys Betancur (if he can stay on the pitch) and Kulusevski seem to have settled in remarkably quickly. I’m still trying to work out exactly what Kulusevski brings. He’s not that quick and always cuts back onto his strong foot so is predictable, yet he is undeniably effective.

Hopefully we can now go on a run and beat the teams we should beat, if so the season is far from over.

  • Niall D says:

    Geoff,
Even Kane himself admitted a lack of form, post Euros.
It must be just a Co incidence that he lost form for us just as he, was being touted for Man C and wasn’t allowed to leave, either way we’ve flogged this to death earlier you have your opinions I have mine.
    LT
When we were poor and beaten by S’oton and Wolves,,there were people on here ready to put the team down within minutes of the final whistle, my point is that they aren’t as quick to post now that there is something positive to say. For me you gotta call the good with the bad.
Not condescending m8 just honest. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Geofspurs says:

ND …. Yes, it is flogged to death so I’ll just say that, given his brilliant performances with Spurs for so long and the fact that every player has periods of loss of form, why were some on here so quick to condemn him.

Anyway, we now have to beat a couple of better teams to make up for the losses against a couple of teams below us. We never do it easy!

  • jod says:

Geofspurs – The problem with that is I would argue there are only three “better teams” in the league at the moment, anyone else we are as good or better than. So the maths doesn’t add up, if you drop points against teams you should beat there aren’t enough games against teams like City to make them up. In this league the race for fourth will probably be decided by consistency not quality, whoever drops least points against teams they should beat wins.

  • Niall D says:

Hi Spurfect One trurs you are keeping well.
just saw you’re post from last nite, it hadn’t come up until after I posted mine.
    Good call m8 ๐Ÿ˜‰.
It does show that if we get the right mix on the field we can beat anyone, get it wrong, anyone can beat us.
The likes of Dier in 3 defensively looks, a totally different player, and credit to him for persevering, when many (myself included) doubted his ability.
But this is the Premier league, look at S’oton’s current run run of good form, anything can happen that’s what makes our league “watchable” World wide”.
    COYS.

  • block 108 spurs says:

I did see a much improved spurs team yesterday… Conte had a full week of training and players have listened and followed instructions. HK10 is back on form with sonny good to see, we are devastating on counterattack.

Lloris improved his goalkeeping 2nd half by catching the ball !! dier and romero getting better and 2 new guys settling in. So now we need to win the games in hand over west ham / man utd starting at Burnley wednesday night. COYS

  • Love totty says:

Jod, absolutely right. Consistency is the key to meeting expectations. If I was a Burnley supporter I would have been ecstatic at having played so defensively to beat a top team like City. But I support one of the richest and traditionally successful clubs in the world and expect our team to go toe to toe with the best. Of course I have to except that we are in transition having failed to recruit effectively for some years, but I don’t have to be happy about it. Yesterday’s stellar result and Harry’s magnificent performance will mean nothing if we lose to Burnley.

  • jod says:

Love totty – I’m guessing finance isn’t your speciality. Either you are supported by oil revenues or you aren’t. Most of us aren’t. City could buy up the entire premier league without blinking so talking about us as one of the richest clubs in the world is meaningless nonsense. You play with what you’ve got, in our case that means strong defence combined with rapid counter attacks whenever possible. That’s partly down to our squad, partly down to the way Conte likes to play. If you are waiting for us to go toe to toe with City you will be in for a long wait. Even against lesser teams it wouldn’t surprise me if we ended the season winning a fair percentage of games with less than 50% possession.

  • 123spurs says:

You play to you’re strengths simple as, we won 3 points they got none.

  • Niall D says:

Hi Jod, very moot point re going toe to toe against City, as you say, it is hard to go up against the finances of a small country.
Given we we’re and are in a period of transition, to achieve such a result is a positive.
What I have enjoyed and applaud, is that in our last few matches, we have played until the very last second never giving up.
As I said in earlier posts, I’ll take whatever positives I can get, and yesterday’s result is indeed a plus.
Couldn’t help but notice the 4th officials’ reaction to our winning goal, I thought he was a Man C assistant, he did look a little less than neutral, in his empathetic glance toward Pep.

  • Love totty says:

Don’t be an arse all your life, Jod. So how come for several years we were going toe to toe with the best and reached a CL final? Fair play rules have narrowed the funding gap and only 11 players are allowed on the pitch at a time. For sure the clubs with the higher pay scales will attract the best and win more, but that shouldn’t prevent us rebuilding a squad capable of running them close.

  • Allan says:

The only match which I have missed !
Will have to perform in a concert every time we play then we might win something !!!
However feet firmly on the ground !
Watched the highlights and it seemed that we had a couple of good chances to wrap it up earlier .
The new boys appear to have settled in well .
Burnley up next .Will we continue to be Spursy ?

  • block 108 spurs says:

Burnley will be a tough game anyway… now they have won their last game it will be a bit more difficult. But I expect spurs to go there and be professional play with confidence counter attack, and win the 3 points. COYS

  • BelgianSpur says:

In a way, this result only confirms how inconsistent we are (and other posters’ comments have said as much). We can beat anyone but lose to anyone.

I still think this inconsistency is going to cost us our chance at top 4 (the league is all about consistency), but I don’t think the FA cup is out of the question.

I’m not saying that’s what I want – we all know that a top 4 finish is probably a more useful building block (financially etc) than winning a cup. I just think that given our up and down results, a cup run seems more likely .
