It is generally accepted by all and sundry that we are at present a club atop the second tier of teams in the English Premier League.
This status allows us to bid for, and indeed, secure the services of some of the best players on the European scene who are skilfully sold the ambitions of the club and it’s Manager by our three wise men:- the Manager himself, Sporting Director, and Chairman.
All is fine and dandy in the short term until it is realised by these players that those dreams will not materialise- well not this season anyway.
They may think to themselves’Hey! I’ve done my bit. I’ve played out of my skin!’ The reply they will be unanimously met with is’Hey! Just wait till next season!’.
Footballers sadly, are an impatient lot. It is a short career and they are anxious for success and trophies. Unfortunately the distress signals emitted attract the bigger clubs(Champions League) who come a-courting and turn their heads so they reluctantly(ha!) leave for pastures new.
Until we can deliver that which we undoubtedly promise, the cycle will continue.The only way to break this stranglehold is to regularly win trophies or secure Champions League then it will be us calling the shots for a change.
