The Curious Case Of Milos Veljkovic

After trying to sell Fazio for most of the summer he is still here and looks like a misfit in the squad.

Given the performance he gave in the League Cup it seems like his days are numbered. Fairly or unfairly that seems to be the case. So why give him the nod over a youngster (and Pochettino has proven he is pretty fond of putting youngsters in the team), who has been very highly rated in the academy for many years?

It would seem that having the versatile defender (he can play DCM and CB both of which are problem positions if Dier or Alderweireld get injuries) in the squad would be valuable considering we didn’t bring anyone in during the summer. Why is it that he is linked with loan moves and playing below his level in the U21/ development squad?

I have heard that Pochettino doesn’t like his laid back style as it doesn’t fit with the all action philosophy that he is developing in the team. The same argument was thrown at Pritchard (he apparently doesn’t chase back when on the defence which is something that can be trained into a player) and yet when he gets fit I’m sure he will be given a chance at some point this season.

What makes Veljkovic so different. Veljkovic is in the last year of his contract and it is the policy of THFC to not have young players in the last year of their contract blocking opportunities for other youngsters. This seems sensible and I agree with the policy however Spurs have a player with so much potential (he was rated as highly as Bentaleb when they played together in the academy) they need to get him on a new contract. This seems far more logical to me as to why he isn’t in the squad.

Given the gaps we have in the squad he would be the ideal person to plug those gaps. The costs of finding someone else that has the same potential, would be home-grown and has the versatility of Veljkovic in today’s market would probably cost us upwards of 15M. Putting him on a new contract would cost considerably less.

Given the financial restraints the club have and will continue to have over the next few years perhaps a cost effective solution is better for all concerned. Does anyone out there know a bit more about this? Is he the potential solution to plug any future back up problems we may need? Why is a player with so much promise not being offered a new contract?
