Summary: Spurs 4-1 Saints

|

Spurs opened their 22/23 campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Saints took the lead on 12 minutes through a neat volley from captain Ward-Prowse, following some neat play from Djenepo that bamboozled Royal just inside the area.

Saints barely had a chance to compose themselves before Sessegnon snuck in at the back post to head in Kulusevski’s lovely cross 10 minutes later. From there, Son forced a decent save from Bazunu before setting Dier up to head home a minute later. Son blazed over from 6 yards out while Kane forced another save from Bazunu on the turn, 2-1 at half-time.

Spurs started the second half in the ascendency, with Sessegnon having an effort chalked off for offside within a minute of the restart. Spurs did not have long to wait to increase their lead, as Salisu bizarrely stuck the ball into his own net on 61 minutes following a misplaced effort from Royal, with Kulusevski curling in a trademark left-footer a minute later for 4-1 to Spurs. Shortly after, Sessegnon departed to a standing ovation to be replaced by Perisic, making his debut.

Securing a fourth did little to deter Spurs from seeking five, and Son’s goalbound effort hit the arm of Stephens, but nothing was given, and Bazunu collected Son’s effort after Kane placed the Golden Boot winner through on goal.

The game eventually fizzled out, and debuts were given to substitutes Lenglet and Bissouma, with the latter picking up a booking as Spurs saw out a resounding victory.

Run up those scores, lads. the whole thing may depend on goal differences at the end of the season. That’s why we top the table today.

I expect to see lots of rotation of players by Conte throughout the season. We’ve got depth in talent. When did we see that before at THFC? lol.

    Enjoy the riches. Use it.

I’d still like to see a crafty midfielder added so we can switch the 3 4 3 to a 3 5 2 when up against a team that’s succeeding at defending our usual formation. But that’s for another day. Today the formation we played worked quite well.

    Top of the Table.

Sounds like a brand label for some frozen food in the supermarket. Doing it on goal difference. Pile on the goals, lads. golden boots for all. five or six with 20 plus goals. why the effing not?

Let our pitch be a field of dreams fulfilled.

From the Fridge to the Top of the Table in six minutes of microwaving.

We are the Top of the Table because we rule goal difference with our microwave attack. It finishes the plays fast. Quick goals on order.

    Yummie. Lip smacking delicious.

Remember how nervous visiting players were when going to Old Trafford when Fergie was there? Let’s see that fear in their eyes entering N17 while Conte is with us.

Table Top Team. Running away with this oddly split season.

On the train back. My first game since that miserable Champions League defeat to Leipzig. We were really good today. I know Southampton were poor but although we had the same starting 11 that finished last season, we are a completely different team.
And my good, that stadium. Has to be the best in the world. COYS

This truly is beginning to look like a solid group on our squad. No reason for our players to be afraid of any other team. We can play with the best, methinks. I can’t wait for them all to get bedded in. And the news speaks of another two or three signings. Wow, even if some of them won’t arrive for another season as they may get loaned back. More to look forward to.

A great opening match to the season and almost no one showed up to comment. But if we lost the match this thread would likely be filled with moans and groans.

Spurs supporters are a funny lot, no? Success makes misery, and losses make for the wonderful experience of complaint.

The danger of this Conte era is that it may take away the favorate activity of supporters: bitching and moaning.

Don’t worry, lads. There will be opportunities for long and full threads.

I wonder what Poch could have accomplished if DL had acted like he has been acting since Conte arrived. Conte gets funded. Poch was told to suck it up, man, and pull off another miracle without replacements.

There. You see? Bitching and moaning is possible even when things are going splendidly. So come back and comment even when things seem to be going well.

    Here’s how to do it:

Kane and Son failed to score on a day when goals were coming so easily. This means that they both will have off years and that will be disastrous for us.

And our new most expensive siging, Richarlison, failed to score. So woe be us.

(Never mind that he was suspended.)

Suspended, you say? that just goes to show that our biggest new signing is going to be a bust. We’re bound to have a disappointing season where non of our front line attackers score any goals.

You can’t win relying on the like of Sess-p00l getting our goals. All the omens are for a disastrous season.

You see? Come on the thread and bitch and moan. It’s fun when it’s not merited. Join in.
