Striker or Forward?

So which is it going to be? A nice tall finisher with the ability to play with his back to goal (striker)? Or an explosive all rounder who can drop deep and bring others into play and score himself (forward)?

Now this may seem trivial to some but I believe it’s an important question, we all agree that we need some more fire power at the business end of things, unless you have been in a coma for the last eighteen months you may have noticed we don’t put the ball in the net very often but we create an absolute plethora of chances (hat’s off to Sir Modric of Moddington).

You see the problem is this, players that have the ability to score come in two categories, strikers and forwards, strikers like Torres, Drogba and Adebayor are your old fashioned target men, we used to have a brilliant one from Bulgaria but his head started to swell uncontrollably, so for fear of it exploding all over Mr Levy`s Bentley he was sold to a Glaswegian with a purple nose at Manchester airport, sorry I digress. Then you have your forward types, a’la Tevez, Rooney and Aguero, the little power houses that love nothing better than to chase the ball for ninety minutes creating and scoring.

Okay so we now have Rafael van der Vaart, who for me personally is a forward type, he likes to drop deep and create chances, you may argue that Rafa is a midfielder, and technically you would be correct but he plays the same role as a forward, he likes to play in the space between the midfield and the Striker. Problem is he doesn’t have the engine of a Tevez or a Rooney.

Would we benefit from bringing in a forward? A player similar to Rafa but with a bit more ‘get up and go’, or was Harry right in not buying Suarez who for me looks like he would fit into any team. Or do we bring in the Striker? A player who can play on his own up front, but feeds on crosses and relies heavily on the team to do most of the work but sticks the ball in the onion bag more often than not.

I personally feel this type of player would be what we need, a player who has strength to hold the ball up and bring others into play, someone that will gobble up 90% of Bales wonderful crosses, and will have the intelligence to play alongside Rafa. Or is it both we need? Could we utilise a forward and a striker? What are your thoughts?
