‘Still dreaming’ – some fans react as Tottenham announce first signing in over 500 days

|

Tottenham confirmed the signing of Jack Clarke from Leeds United on Tuesday and some fans couldn’t contain their delight on social media. It had been more than 500 days since Spurs’ last acquisition – Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-Germain in January 2018 – but now they’ve landed the signature of a highly-rated winger who could shine under Mauricio Pochettino.

Clarke has been loaned back to Leeds for the 2019/20 season, which is a good move as he wouldn’t have been a regular at Tottenham due to the stiff competition for places – Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura, Heung-min Son. The 18-year-old will benefit from playing on a regular basis next season and will return to Spurs as a more mature and developed talent.

After rising through the youth ranks to the Leeds first-team in 2018, Clarke has gone on to make 25 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating four goals. The majority of his appearances under Marcelo Bielsa were from the bench (814 minutes in the Championship), so it’s highly impressive that Clarke created 17 chances and made 27 successful dribbles (56%).

It will be 2020 when Tottenham fans see Clarke in the Premier League, but he may be worth the wait.
