Stats: We Needed To Match Inter’s Result – Few Expected Spurs To Match Their Score

|

At 8pm this evening Tottenham Hotspur kicked off the game against Barcelona at the Nou Camp with a place in the last 16 of the Champions League up for grabs.

With Barcelona comfortably clear at the top of Group B, we went into the game in second place, holding the advantage over Inter Milan and the minimum we needed was to match their result against PSV Eindhoven.

Our chances of doing just that were boosted with the news that Luis Suarez was out of the squad, and Lionel Messi took a place on the bench.

That wasn’t quite what the game had in store though and the hosts took advantage seven minutes into the tie. Spurs battled well after that point though and Barca even bought Busquets and Messi on but five minutes from the full-time whistle substitute Lucas Moura made his mark to draw us level at 1-1.

With Inter also drawing with PSV it was set up to be a tight and nervy finish but we held on for the point and then it was all eyes to the other game. They also drew, so job done.

With that said, matching their result shouldn’t have necessarily meant losing the game, like they did, for the majority of the match!

As an aside from the stats, the draw was the least we deserved.
