I’m not sure Monday nights were ever designed for this, but Tottenham Hotspur welcomed Manchester City to Wembley Stadium yesterday evening for our latest Premier League clash.
Heading into the game, only two points separated Mauricio Pochettino’s side from Pep Guardiola’s charges and both teams had won seven matches apiece.
It wasn’t a great showing from either side really I don’t think, and the pitch was probably the overriding factor when it came to the quality of football on show as the best efforts of the ground staff simply weren’t enough following the NFL clash between the Eagles and the Jaguars – and the less said about the pitch markings is probably for the better.
Riyad Mahrez’s sixth-minute effort was enough to decide the game and unfortunately for us, Erik Lamela wasted a gilt-edged chance to level late on when he was put through by Dele Alli but somehow the bobble got the better of him and he missed the opportunity and it’s probably a good testament to how close Spurs are to that next step – but equally maybe how far we’ve still to go.
