Spursy Takes On A New Meaning As Bournemouth SomeHowe Take Us To School – Match Stats

|

Following on from Monday evening’s narrow victory over Everton at White Hart Lane, Tottenham Hotspur’s Thursday evening fixture saw us head to Dean Court to face struggling Bournemouth.

With it looking likely that any kind of Champions League adventure for the 2020/21 campaign was now thoroughly off the cards, fans simply wanted to see a performance that renewed some hope for the months ahead given our now, long lasting, struggles on the pitch.

It was a lively enough start and Spurs could’ve had a penalty inside of the opening five minutes, but the referee thought Harry Kane went down a little too easily, so the calls were dismissed. It wasn’t a deliberate push, but I’d have said stonewall myself.

We were on top, but they carried more of a threat in the first half and Jose Mourinho made changes at the break.

It seemed to work as well (for a bit) but despite the chances, we didn’t test their keeper and it seemed to fizzle out as a contest for me – but maybe that had more to do with what looked like a serious injury to Smith and the subsequent delay in play.

The game did then get a bit tasty in the final few minutes with Bournemouth having a disallowed goal and some heavy tackles going in, and in stoppage time they had another goal ruled out by VAR and we had another penalty decision turned down.

No shots on target, not what anyone wanted but thoughts to Smith. The game may be summed up by the fact I didn’t even see the first time they had the ball in the net.

Night all.

Game day for one of biggest games of the season and no match thread six hours before kick-off. Probably symptomatic of the apathy being shown due to the posting issue, nobody wants to be bothered writing articles or game threads. ๐Ÿ™

Well that debate was well worth the read, well done HT & EJ, not forgetting the imput by others.

For me as a long time loyal fan I basically have no bloody idea, yes I have an opinion for what it is worth, I said something about 18 months ago, others have said the same, quote….there is something very wrong at Spurs, that started with Poch in charge, a very simple statement, and yet we really have no clue what it is, all guess work and opinions.

    Now for today….
Will we win? answer I have no idea!
Can we win? answer yes! well am hopeful lol!

    Come On You Spurs….please lol!

We’ve all been wondering where things have gone wrong and I have had a thought on the subject.

We can all see the effect the introduction of one player can make to a squad with Bruno Fernandes at United (I was gutted when we failed to get him) and I believe this is where our issue lies.

If we look back to where it all started going wrong I believe the poor performances started when Christian Eriksen stopped playing for us, when I say ‘stopped playing for us’ I’m not talking about when he transferred away, I’m talking about when his heart was clearly no longer in playing for Spurs. Since this time we have lacked a creative attacking playmaker in his like with Fernandes being the obvious example who not only creates scoring opportunities for others but also chips in with a good few goals as well.

I really don’t rate Solskjaer as a manager but the introduction of Fernandes is making him look very good!

  • Geofspurs says:

TQ …. At the risk of annoying people I will have to say that Erikson never CONSISTENLY played for us. Some games were very good but it rarely happened when it was most needed, ie, the big games and, despite some great free kicks, how often did his corners clear the first man?

  • Hot Tottingham says:

TQ2, When Eriksen was ever criticised on here and back to when he was our main playmaker… Before he “stopped playing for us”, I used to say that he is a player that some supporters won’t realise how much we would really miss him until he is gone. And I mean’t when he was out through injury or dropped for whatever reason.

And I believe we did miss him a lot, even though the team could cope much better without him than Spurs have coped since he lost form, last season.

It wasn’t just about his passing skills and range either. He worked damn hard closing down players and space and always making space for himself. He was one of those creative players that could see a pass before he was passed to himself. He had that little map of the pitch and bodies in his head and knew where his colleagues were to be instantly found or the spaces he should play into… We really don’t have that right now…

But given time I do think that Lo Celso and Ndombele have some of that creative vision. But do they also have CE’s engine and core strength? Not right now I don’t think but given time, maybe…

Looking forward to Jose putting another rookie manager to the sword just like he has already done with Solkskjaer, Lampard, Wilder and Neigelson.
On the other hand he could be completely out manoeuvred by a manager playing progressive, attacking football. Arsenals weakness is at the back, will Jose try to exploit that, of course he bloody well wonโ€™t. It will be the usual bore the opposition and fans to death and try to sneak a win with a dodgy own goal. Jose out now

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

On a separate note, I havenโ€™t seen Frank post on this site for a while. I hope all is well with you Frank. Please put a post up to let us know you are OK. I miss your rants about ENIC and Levy

  • TQ2Spurs says:

DH……somebody queried Frank’s absence a week or so ago but still haven’t seen any response from him, maybe you could nip across to Scarborough and ask around if anyone knows a grumpy old man of that name?

I make light of it but I do hope he is ok.

what use is a game thread when the comments are delayed. the joy of being in a game thread is to get one another’s comments during the match when the players are playing. liberate the site. post the comments when the comments still have some live sizzle. liberate the threads.

  • TK says:

thanks for the comment about Frank’s absence, Doncaster. I echo your concern over Frank’s absence.

  • TK says:

WTF? For a change the first half actually looked like a football match. I’m not whether that makes me happy or not. Every minute of pathetic displays makes us edge closer to the end of the Mourinho era. But It’s was nice to be surprised to see a half of football for a change.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Not our worst performance but our attack is based on long balls up to Kane and then see what happens. Le Celso is a quality player but he is too deep. Jose is a dinosaur and should be replaced now

  • tk says:

recently the main thing worth commenting about has been the crap site where comments don’t show up for hours after posting. Come on you Spurs. And wake up VS. This is a site where comments need to show up when they’re posted. Not an hour later.

  • Geofspurs says:

Good first half. Spurs are playing well and moving FORWARD much more when they have the ball. It looks winnable.

  • El Jefe says:

Hi HT – just seen some of your replies – I will try to answer as best I can lol – as regards JM – I think you and many on here, etc are actually being somewhat unfair as no one wanted him to leave Porto nor did anyone want him to leave Inter either and he was certainly not removed from either – quite on the contrary – both wanted him to stay completely but he choose to move on after winning everything for both! Furthermore at Chelski they had him back and he won another Prem league title to add to the first two he’d already won in his original spell. Yes he was removed at Chelski twice eventually and at Madrid he was also eventually removed but personally I feel both are basket case whore clubs who rarely show proper loyalty for their manager’s I mean look at Zizou at Madrid – he left then came back again aswell lol after winning 3 CL’s in a row and it was rumoured that Madrid/Perez wanted to get JM back again also after Zizou left and until he came back eventually again! How many managers have both of these clubs had in the last 10-15 years or so under Perez and Abramovich – it’s ridiculous – constantly chopping and changing especially Chelski! Even Man U – since Ferguson left, have been chopping and changing also!

I would say that Porto and Inter did not want him to leave, quite the opposite both wanted him to stay. Chelski had him back a 2nd time and it was worth it. Madrid apparently wanted him back a 2nd time also! Only Man U of the club’s who have removed him have not so far wanted him back again but they only removed him very recently!

I’d say it’s more or less 50/50 and like I say 2 of the 3 club’s that removed him, 1 had him back and the other apparently wanted him back.

He is a world class manager – his constant track record proves this – everyone (the expert’s) in the game say this very same thing – there must be a reason for it surely?!

  • El Jefe says:

HT – as regards Davies, Rose was always the 1st team choice apart from when injured. Davies was a good squad/cover player to have no doubt and still is but he was never a 1st team regular! If he was a top player he should have put Rose in his place and taken over but he could never do that! Rose has seriously dropped off now, it’s not that Davies has suddenly improved that much – hence Rose has been/is being moved on and for now Davies is taking his place as there was/is currently not much other option!

As regards Sessegnon – what do you suggest we do with him then? I argued a while back ago that if he could not get games for us that we should send him out on loan in the Prem like we did with Walker and Rose back in the day (who then eventually became star performers for us) but you disagreed with me but you continue to say that he should not play because he’s not yet good enough – surely something has to give?! Furthermore if he’s not good enough to play LB in the first team or even cover, surely we need someone to compete/cover with Davies as I suggested yesterday (ideally someone to come into or atleast challenge for the 1st team straight away)?! Vert’s can do but that really is getting desperate and he could well be about to leave anyway this summer!

Also we have Sonny and Bergs as LW so he has no chance there – indeed he was bought first before Bergs which means JM must surely see him as a future LB!

I had high hopes for Sess and want to see him succeed but accept that the best option could well be for him to go out on loan for a season and then see how it goes and at the moment I’ll have to stick by that!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

EJ my non fact post was a joke.

But, Jose was poached by Chelsea from Porto after just 2 seasons there. And then poached again by Real when at Inter after just a couple of years. But it is true that he left Chelsea twice under a bit of a cloud. The first time was stated as by “mutual consent” which basically means, Roman said he would like him to go and Jose said ok, I’ll go…. The second time it was again called “mutual consent” which means he was asked to leave again and he agreed. But this time apparently, he left on good terms with Roman. But it happened because of a really poor start to the season. And with Chelsea players seriously under performing for him. He was then straight up fired by MU. Because of individual players and the team underperforming, player/manager rifts, poor results and after spending a large sum of money to not see the team improving but going backwards results wise. The MU owners also said that the football was not in the attacking style that their supporters are accustomed to seeing and wanting…. He left Real by “mutual agreement” after a run of very poor results. With their world class players again underperforming as with at Chelsea (twice) and MU. All 3 clubs being his most recent posts before coming to Spurs.

It’s not a good sign for me… But we will see.

So I am right about things turning sour within 3 years or so at those 3 clubs. With his times at Porto and Inter ending after just a couple of seasons because he was poached. And so he loved and left them for better things… Fair enough….

The one thing that is constant since he came back to the PL. and with Real, is the teams doing very well initially but then fading pretty fast. Which is kind of the reverse of what we need at Spurs imo. I mean if we were to do well next season with him but then find we are not really set up for the following seasons then, we haven’t progressed. Which is why even winning a trophy is not necessarily progress. Not if the team stops performing soon after and our top players are unhappy with his style of football.. Not if the younger up-coming stars of the future are not promoted etc, etc….

Players actually do want to be able to enjoy their football and express themselves in the game, whilst they are winning stuff. And club owners and chairman/women (in spite of popular belief) do want to keep their supporters happy as well as their playing staff. I mean it’ll be a manager that’s fired when things go bad and not Harry Kane.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

And EJ, you still haven’t managed to answer my question that I have repeated a few times.

Why is Jose asked to leave clubs so soon after winning championships, CL finals and other trophies? And by contrast, why was Poch at Spurs for so long but without winning nowt?

I have answered these myself but you haven’t…. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Hot Tottingham says:

EJ, Davies and Rose pretty much shared the LB role. I’m pretty sure that Davies played a similar amount to Rose for a few seasons running. And that was a lot to do with Danny’s injuries but that is what it is. I just said he has played regularly. Which he has. As much as Danny these past few seasons. And it’s Rose that is out on loan right now, not Davies… ๐Ÿ˜‰

It doesn’t mean we couldn’t do with another LB. But Davies has been very good for Spurs imo….. Just as good as Rose. Different style but no worse, no better. Just different. And certainly not as injury prone…
