Spurs U-Turn Is Welcomed But Now It’s Really Over To The Players

|

Regular readers of Vital Spurs will already know my thoughts on Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to furlough non-playing staff at the club, particularly doing so prior to coming to an agreement with the playing staff so they could rightly share the burden and show some solidarity – so naturally, I applaud the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust and their ongoing efforts to see the move reversed (which it now has been).

The full statement, as they explain their reasoning and their hopes, make perfect sense to me as football as a whole should be coming together at this moment in time, and not just protecting a club in isolation, but also ensuring the industry as a whole is in a position to come through this intact.

Sadly, given the self protectionist guff we’ve seen from Gordon Taylor at the Professional Footballers’ Association, and Richard Masters’ response from the Premier League, that thought is the furthest from their minds at the moment as they focus solely in on their own renumeration.

With the players themselves setting up their charitable NHS fund, whilst the move should be applauded, it’s left a lot of fans – like me – further disgusted with the wider attitude of footballers.

I should quickly say not all footballers and there are those who have sensible stayed quiet, but the fact it has been used by some to bite back at valid criticism in the direction of footballers and even worse, when you have the likes of Robert Snodgrass suggesting footballers should ‘earn respect’ for simply paying their taxes – the clueless bubble that Premier League football lives in is painted even more starkly.

Football’s response was never about the NHS or taxes, it was about playing their part in firstly, protecting normal club staff who make their lives possible, their club and then – for me – helping out fellow clubs and playing colleagues (who were, in turn, playing their own part and protecting normal staff).

Given the wide-ranging opinions offered up so far, I expect not everyone will agree – but given I’m so steadfast in my thoughts here, I’d certainly welcome the opposite perspective.

I wasn’t actually going to have another mini-rant like this given the topic had been well covered, but our friends over at Vital Villa had their say over the weekend, and not only was I pretty much in 100% agreement, it got my own juices flowing.

So given this isn’t quite ‘furlough’ related and comes at things from a different angle, I thought it was worth raising.

Given the announcement made by Spurs earlier this afternoon, I have had to rewrite some of the above, but I can only applaud the Board for listening to the concerns raised, and although some may question why it took so long to reverse the decision, at least it has been reversed.

I can also only applaud the following announcements.

Now, over to the players, Spurs have played their part.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Apparently not block 108, they obviously don’t have anyone clever enough. Now would be a good time for them to play around with it, and even do a complete re-install of the software if necessary, while there is no footie to discuss.

  • Niall D says:

Hi Folks . TQ and B 108 I totally agree with your posts. I am currently typing blind. I can’t see the post square due to invasive adverts. I’m at the age where I’m relatively competent, but not confident with tech. When I open a post it jumps everywhere. It takes ages for a post to appear and there fote destroys the thread of an argument or discussion. Sorry goys don’t say much now as it take ages, to correct. Please excuse any mistakes I’ll give posting a miss for a while as this is no pleasure. Please stay safe I’ll look in on you’re posts please all stay safe. Best wishes Niall.

Niall….it won’t be appreciated by the site admin but suggest you install adblocker plus on your device, you’ll need the right version to suit the browser you use.

  • Niall D says:

Just done it TQ thank you for the tip. He’s back.

Niall D……… You will find ad block will make a big difference on here and on other sites you visit….. user friendly advice TQ2. Perhaps VS staff have not fixed the site due to reduced clicks on the ads. or am I a bit too cynical? IMO… Compared to other VF sites spurs are way ahead of usage / posts every week of the season, and in summer TF window.

Have you all noticed… since spurs have been doing much better other the last 4 years.. Trolls have not appeared on VS. Now having said that… LOL……. COYS

Interesting rumours this morning that all remaining PL and Championship games (totalling around 200) might be streamed lived for free via Sky/BT YouTube channels or free to air TV. They are talking about 3 games or so per day with the intention of completed the program by the end of July. That surely would be a feast of footie!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

We keep being linked to Ryan Fraser in the gossip columns, there is a reason why he is 26 and still at Bournemouth……… no disrespect intended. 🙂

  • Niall D says:

Must agree TQ. He is an OK player but OK isn’t good enough for us. I think Fraser is at his level now. He is an Everton, Newcastle, Southampton type player. Again no disrespect. We can do better. Once again TQ and B 108 for the tip. COYS.

  • Niall D says:

Any body else fed up with the N’Dombele saga. He’s staying with us, he’s going to go to Barcelona, Liverpool, PSG. Sometimes he’s supposed to be training, then we hear he has the wrong attitude supposedly from training staff. We’ve now been linked to Caravahlo or Rakitic. Aarrrggghh. The merry go round starts. Ffs we NEED a DM a fekin RB and CF.

  • PompeyYid says:

Now now ND calm down haha, remember the effin media need to fill pages and lines, so out comes all the bulls**t, its a never ending story, think there’s a film in there somewhere lol!

Your needs 100% backing there, especially a “I will kick my Granny to stop her getting past me” DM, that sort of player takes the pressure off the back line, note Wanyamah at his best for us.

An RB to give competition agreed, maybe even be 1st choice, and a back up CF to ease the pressure on “our Arry”, and maybe play alongside in certain games. COYS 4 ever

  • Niall D says:

OK PY doing the breathing. Lol. Just missing the weekly normal football stuff.

  • PompeyYid says:

ND….a bit of football for you and others of course, I have just watched a 4 or 5min video of Jack Roles and the job he is doing whilst on loan at Cambridge, the boy looks like he has a proper football brain to match his undoubted skill, “one of our own” for the future, maybe even now without throwing him into the deep end, I was very impressed with him ruling the midfield, worth a look. COYS 4 ever

  • TQ2Spurs says:

What a class act HK10 is, would be good to see a few more PL players doing similar, he sets a wonderful example for our younger players to follow. I hope we can find some success so he never leaves us other than to gain some managerial experience before leading us in Bill Nicholson fashion in the future.

  • PompeyYid says:

TQ2S….spot on there with your post regards “our Arry”, well said.

We have to dream eh! COYS 4 ever.

  • TK says:

Is COVID-19 dealing a death blow to VS? This site has been more vital during the summer months between seasons. The vitality is hard to find today.

    • Danny Winter says:

I’ve stepped back TK purely because there’s no real news. I can’t throw myself into transfer rumours because they are more nonsense than ever until we know how 2019/20 finished, what happens to 2020/21 and will players contracts be extended to cover the period they have taken a wage where they were unable to perform etc. A normal summer is lively – this forced news at this period is largely nonsense/fake call it what you prefer. I definitely can’t be alone in not logging on because you know there’s nothing new? I also imagine we’ve all get better things to worry about right now, when it comes to family, friends etc. In finally getting my bum back on here – I do hope my posts find everyone well and safe as many notable names are missing – I just hope they are of my mind and have taken a break from checking in.

  • TK says:

    hello Danny,

I wasn’t writing a criticism of you and I apologize to you for prompting you to think I was, but just commenting that VS seems lacking in vitality these days.

I could say this just as easily about the UK (is there still such a thing as a United Kingdom? It seems fractured and astonishingly disunited. If this site were the UK of football site I’d have written that the unity was gone on the UK site. The Scottish, Welsh and northern Irish have stopped listening to what is said in London).

Sadly, the Vital Spurs site is dragging its tail and showing a large lack of vitality. That’s not because of a lack on DW’s part–hard to think of what thread would bring us to life now, but a lack of connection in our world today. We are separated from one another and our communities are fractured. We’re so fractured that we’re not even ranting about Dele Alli getting all his jewelry taken at knife point. (I’m not sure I’m bothered more by the violent robbery or the absurd focus on collecting lots of jewelry.)

I cannot imagine running up and down a pitch with a mask and beclouded lungs attached to a ventilator. The only solution I can see for VS in the short run would be to have some nostalgia threads referring to our mythical past or, hesitant to imagine, some imaginary future where people actually get to play and watch vital football, alive, vigorous, energetic, and not bogged down by social and political bickering.

My god, someone cursed me on the street yesterday for wearing a mask. Can you imagine that this is our political and social situation these days? Curse me if you will for wearing a cockerel on my breast, but for wearing a mask during a pandemic? I’d be tempted to spit at you if not wearing a mask. (insert emoji of choice here)

Vitality is on lockdown, and I can’t even find an antibody test for it.

Cheer me up. Tell me the story about JosĂ© Mourinho leaving the club. I’d take No. 10 as a player/manager. If he’s got the bottle to keep himself off the pitch when he’s not fit.

Anyway, Danny, I didn’t mean my comment as a shot at you, not at all. You’re not responsible for the malaise, for the draining of vitality from our planet. the lack of vitality at vital spurs is just a symptom of an era of constantly expanding symptoms.

I’d give you a hug, Danny, but social distancing and all that…

    • Danny Winter says:

Hi TK, no didn’t take as a dig – apologies if my slightly beer-goggled response suggested such. Was just outlining my lack of appearance and the assumption with nothing really happening, that others had been of a similar mind. It’s not even like a normal summer break from where I sit, because you know squads will change then, but until we get more clarity on where 2019/20 goes, there’s as much chance of players having their deals extended to end the season to make up for the period they couldn’t play, as anything else happening. I don’t see a lot changing until we get that ‘spark’ back of knowing what’s happening. I more than agree with the rest of your post – we continue to see the best and worst of people at the moment, but I’m trying to not get sucked into the doom as you’ve got to try and keep a smile on your face haven’t you. Hugs and COYS back and to everyone!

  • PompeyYid says:

TQ…I think you are spot on there with the “vitality has gone” it seems it is like that every where, take myself for example I have trained/worked out with weights, some as my missus would say, in the past that is, are freak weights and not natural lol!, for many years 35+, but since this lockdown I have become increasingly “can’t be arsed”, to make things worse I have my own home Gym, ie Smith machine, barbells, dumbells etc + a Cross Trainer, all there but at the mo having the inclination to use is lost.

I think we will all get a “lift” once the all clear is given, fear is dropped, things start resuming to a normal/natural way of life, so chin up mate and look forward to seeing the mighty Spurs again. COYS 4 ever

  • TQ2Spurs says:

TK & Danny………I know I keep banging on about it but the page 2 issue has done most to kill the vitality of the site, just ask all of the regular posters.

This issue is now unresolved for around 6 months and the lockdown period would have been the ideal opportunity for Vital to troubleshoot the problem, including taking the site offline temporarily if necessary. It’s pretty clear they don’t give a shit.

There is absolutely no doubt that the delay in posts appearing for anything up to two hours has killed conversation of any kind, football related or otherwise. I fear many of the regular posters won’t come back when football restarts.

If I’m honest, after watching a couple of Budesliga games over the weekend, I think my love of the game has been severely dented by the selfish attitude of PL players during the coronavirus crisis….with some obvious exceptions……and I’m not sure if I’m that bothered whether it comes back or not.

    • Danny Winter says:

I haven’t heard back TQ2 or I’d have said something. I do know this period has hit massively across the industry and I can only imagine some of our ‘competitors’ may not be with us whenever we do return. But knowing their tech lad was across the entire network and swamped, I have no idea how his time is now being utilised – and sadly it does seem the P2 issue was limited to us, so maybe not as high a priority as we’d have all liked. It might be the right time to have pulled the site and started fresh, but I honestly don’t know if there’s anyone to do that at the moment? Behind closed doors doesn’t exactly inspire me, and I didn’t even bother with the Bundesliga matches – I’ve just largely switched off from football completely. Looking around Vital on odd occasions, the lull has hit everyone and there are plenty expressing your thoughts on the game as a whole moving forward. Just the unknown still isn’t it – but it doesn’t seem there is the clamour for a return as the PL and Gov keep banging on – and understandably so as there are bigger concerns for most of us.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Thanks for the response Danny, hope you and yours are keeping well.

  • PompeyYid says:

Over the weekend I watched 4 no German games, bored or what, it was like watching paint dry, a pre-season friendly, yes I watched 4 games am I an idiot or what, I just kept on trying to no avail.

Keep well all. COYS 4 ever.
